I've been using these for years and have never run into the issue that arose today. I have one on a 13 HP Honda. Been on that engine for several years (OK, 14). It still shows #'s so the battery isn't dead. I always buy direct as they recommend. Anyway, today the tack registered 1 hour use from last use and I know the engine ran for over 3 hours. Ok, since it does not display minutes, once could argue that the last reading had just flipped to say 42 and now the reading is 43 and could be close to showing 44 meaning 2 hours of use. But I'm sure it ran for over 3 hours. It has always indicated session hours within reason.

Do these go bad like this?

These are like $15 on Amazon if I understand what you have. I buck a year seems like you got about 10X your $ worth. I have one that is sealed and still working 5+ years later. I recently bought a new one with a replaceable battery.

How's the sense wire around the spark plug lead look? It's been several years since I installed one but I recall there being something in the instructions about how and how many times to wrap that wire.

Just checked all of the wiring and it is all good. The ground is under the vertical bolt on the left of the red tank.
