Too good to be true?

Hi guys,

I've been meaning to start getting a basic collection of tools to be able to to basic maintenance/modification to my motorcycles from home. I've been taking a look at the craftsman tool sets for a while, and today I stumbled upon this in CL:

I checked on Sears and that toolkit goes for double that price, plus the top box. Doesn't it seem too good to be true? I'll call the guy in an hour or so, and will try to get a reason for selling it.

Good price for sure, but I wouldn't say too good to be true.

I picked up two of those sets for around $500 each brand new. One was on clearance at my local store and the other was a local ad deal at a nearby store. It's rare to find them that cheap however, but they do occasionally drop to $750-800. That top box is probably only worth around $75 used.

Seems like a lot of tools for just basic maintenance on a motorcycle.

Don't they usually have the 150-200 piece sets on sale for $100 or so?

If the guy is buying them for $400 plus tax, throwing in a 32" Husky box, and selling it all for $500, he is wasting his time.

I highly doubt that. Given the box and other tools included, it doesn't sound like a flipper at all.

Lot of redundancy in that set, but at least it has 6-point 1/2" sockets.

you find random sales where people just want stuff gone. it usually goes quickly though.... craigslist is nice because you can see it before cash exchanges hands unlike ebay.

Did you actually read the ad before coming to that conclusion? He is throwing in a Husky 5 drawer box, torque wrench, hammer and some pliers. Not much of a flip if he actually bought that set for $400 as you surmise.

It's definitely worth making a phone call. If it checks out, take the cash and a friend or two to go pick it up. Buy them lunch at McDonalds, Del Taco or Carl Jr's for going and call it a day.

I think the husky top box is something like 90 bucks new (I was just at home depot and that's what I remember, it might be cheaper). So 410 for the tools. It's not a bad deal but I don't know if it's a good deal. You probably won't get robbed but I used the qualifier "probably" so if you want the set bring a friend.

You could probably put together a somewhat similar set for cheaper when you can id better quality tools. I mean versus paying the price sears demands for that large set (which is way too high in my opinion for china stuff). Starting out you don't need that big a set but if you have the money and are willing then it's a decent price. Just remember that if the tool quality is sub-par (I don't think the chinese craftsman is sub-par but others do) you're stuck with a whole set of them even if they have a lifetime warranty. Kind of a big risk to take.

As for the "other stuff" you don't know what (brand) he's including. It might be harbor freight stuff so it might be low rent. I have harbor freight hammers, they ain't too shabby but the pliers people say are garbage (not that you'll ever need them).

If the set is under 400 as others are saying maybe you should just buy the set and forgo the box for a while. It should have a case which is good enough for home use.

The 400 dollar set in CA is reconditioned, if you hold your cursor over the ? it says it could be missing pieces and depending on what all is missing determines the discount level. They aren't selling the complete set for 400

if you go look at the set bring a list of what comes with the set and see what is missing. like stated the cheap sets are reconditioned.
