Both Montezuma and Extreme boxes are very nice and can be tailored at little better to his liking.

They do cost more than Menards/ HF/ Sears.

FYI my next box purchase will be an Extreme or Montezuma, and I currently have a 42" Excel

Don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but if your husband is a "die hard buy American" kind of guy, he may not really be happy with a HF box.

As I did see someone say, a toolbox can be a 'personal' item and up to personal preferences. If your husband has lots of Craftsman tools but no HF tools, I'd be careful about buying him a HF box because he may just dislike it for the brand alone blind to the actual quality.

That said, have a look at the thread in my signature where I stacked two of the 44" boxes for even more storage.

Yes they do cost more !! - FAR more than the OP stated was in the budget and most likely the reason no one mentioned them.
Extreme 41 1/2" 11 drawer - $879.00
US General 42" - 13 drawer $359.00

It does highlight the customer value of the US General offering - as the two are about the same in most regards.

FWIW,

IONH -- your stacked boxes look great! But TALL!

My husband is like me -- prefers to buy American when he can and is willing to pay a little more in order to do so, but isn't die-hard about it. If he were buying this for himself, I think he'd buy mainly on quality and features for the price, with American vs. foreign being more of a tie-breaker.

I am in the same boat. I current have the gladiator tool box I got as a gift from my dad when I moved into my new house. I have since outgrown it over the past year and I am looking to get a bigger one.

Check the home depot link, this is what I may trade it in for. I checked it out at the store and the drawers seem more flimsy then my gladiator, also not as deep, but for the price you can't beat it.

I agree with Kevin. All my toolboxes are from Snap-On and way overkill for what your husband needs.... but if I was going to buy a more economical box, I'd buy one of the Masterforce from Menards. I've compared them to every store brand out there and they are by far the bent for the money imo.
