Two Code Questions

1). Can a j-box (4S w/ blank cover) be used as part of a concealed (in wall) raceway if only used as a pull point with no splices/connections inside?


2). How close to a sink can a receptacle be located?

1) Nope, can't conceal any boxes.

2) No restrictions but will require GFCI protection.

Thanks. Found the code paragraph on Mike Holt's forum re: the j-box as well. No exceptions allowed.

Guess the receptacle device box above a countertop near the sink (18" +/-) will serve as a j-box. Since it's for an outdoor kitchen, everything will be GFCI protected anyway.

You can always install a "access panel" in the sheet rock to gain access to the "hidden" junction box.……… Plumbers do this all the time to gain access to valves.

Access panel won't really work. Electrical and plumbing are already stubbed up from the concrete (remodeling an existing outdoor kitchen); a SS sink cabinet goes on the inside part the wall where the stubs are, and the outside will be faced ledger stone stacked block.

The original install had a painted wood panel where the utilities stub up with a j-box for the electrical. (Walls are only 4' +/- high). I'm trying to avoid duplicating the same 'cause it looked kinda crappy. Major sun exposure (and heat - up to 120+ F) on that wall, and painted surfaces don't weather well.

Probably need to pull new wires as the ex wires won't reach the new receptacle. And pull in a dedicated circuit for the outdoor fridge. None of this was GFCI protected; I plan to do it correctly (well, have the sparkies do it correctly!)

As long as you are willing to pull new conductors/cable, then extending the conduit with flex or more conduit makes the problem go away.
