ungrounded circuits- plastic or metal junction boxes?

I'm removing some things in the attic that were just tapped into & taped over in the attic by a previous "handyman" like knob & tube would be.

To repair these runs, I need to use junction boxes. The house is wired with mid 50's romex 12/2 no ground.

Since I can't ground a metal box, should I use plastic ones or is metal correct?

Just trying to do it correctly & safely.

I use plastic boxes as much as I can

Both are acceptable. Go with whatever works best and is the easiest to install.

if you use a metal box it must be bonded to ground. plastic is much easier in this respect

Or use a Romex splice kit, and skip the box altogether (yes, these are approved for use without a box).
