I put a computer in my garage about a year ago and have never used it, so it doesn't matter what software is on it. My garage is a garage, not a game room.

I use Google to search out parts numbers and PDF files of manuals and other diagrams. Also takes me to company's websites to look up diagrams, etc.

I sort of think of it as on online Chilton's. I'm guessing youre old enough to know what a Chilton's is.

A web browser, Adobe PDF, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, MS Office and Engine Analyzer about covers it.

I like my old "analog" Motor Manuals. I have from 1982 back to 1938

Like others have said:
Web Browser and pdf reader will get you a long way for reference and sourcing parts.

The only other things that I have on the garage computer is DraftSight (lightweight and free cad program) and a music player so I can stream all my music form my NAS.

My garage computer exists to stream pandora and run tunerstudio for megasquirt. The rest is google for whatever I need to know at the time.

A nod to 2 resource websites, not software:
For some good parts websites take a look at http://showmetheparts.com/
A lot of vendors have switched to electronic catalogs since they can update them quicker.
If you go to many vendors websites and go to their catalog, it will usually redirect you to the showmetheparts website. You can see what I mean by going here:
http://showmetheparts.com/Html/News.html

Also, http://frugalmechanic.com/ is one resource to find cheap prices for car parts.
No more RockAuto on it though.
If you need some coupons, their is a page for them, (this includes Advance Auto)

ScanXL, just waiting for my cable to show up in the the mail. I don't own a damn thing that can use it, but looking forward to trying it out on my buddy's newer Mustang and F250...

Online data, factory manuals for my Passat, Dodge Raider and music streaming. I even put a 42" monitor on the wall so I can see the manuals while I'm working.

The best use is to stream music..

I picked up a set of used Z-2300 computer speakers. Nice sound, great volume.

Way better than my old FM radio.

No pay services.... So far just having the factory manuals for the cars I have has been enough.

SketchUp
openoffice/google docs
photoshop/something similar taking photos of work progress & stuff to sell

There are more. If you use a PC as a tool, there's lots more than just google, although that's still what I use most.

Convert. Its a conversion tool for all manner of different units of measure, be it length, volume, area, power, ect. Google it.

I have the internet on the computer and I have DeltaCad which is a 2D CAD program, along with a few machining sites I have bookmarked. I also have tap & drill charts, conversion charts, rivet charts, and a few other charts that I can pull up anytime.

I use it to upload pictures of stuff when I have questions, so smarter people can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

And music.....amplified through this (figured it was relevant since I built it in the garage):

I keep a copy of my FSM on there too, as well as any manuals I can get in PDF form. I also have some reference images but most of them are more scientific than practical, like the tap/die charts like menitoned above.

A friend of mine who runs a printing press in his garage keeps test patterns/color references available so he can pull it up on the screen. Guys who do painting could probably get away with something similar, but you have to get very expensive (PVA or IPS if you get a panel, I have a CRT still) monitors specifically for their color-correct features. If you use any old screen you won't necessarily be that close to what the pigment will be, and of course you might not want to keep an expensive monitor like that in the garage.

any and all manuals in PDF form (I've got about 240-250 GB of manuals for non-work reference)

Pandora

Sketchup (only to read files, mostly) If I'm going to do any decent designing, I do it at my desk inside.
