Vintage Toolbox Wanted

My small basement work area is getting quite cramped with tools. Because my garage is not heated, this is where I spend a lot of time in the colder months. I need some additional storage down there.

Vintage toolboxes are, for me, super-cool. I'd like to pick up at least one to use down there. Benchtop or small roller...if it is vintage, maybe an oddball brand, and shipping wont destroy the deal, I am interested.

The good news is there are many vintage boxes within a one-day-round-trip of you.

The bad news is packing and shipping a small vintage box any distance is going to cost more than the box is worth unless it is a rare and valuable piece. I was given an old Walker-Turner bandsaw and it cost $160 - more than it was worth, to get it shipped to me. The donor did $150 worth of crating, but not well enough and the saw arrived damaged from it's own weight resting on the die-cast pulleys and wheels.

with UPS, I would think that a benchtop box could be shipped for about $30 or so...perhaps I am mistaken!

You're pretty close. I had a Craftsman top and middle box shipped and it was less than $75.

Not trying to discourage you. I ship unlikely stuff every week, including engines, transmissions and rear axles.

Here's a bit of trivia for the forum. Over the course of human history, most of the energy consumed has been used for moving people and stuff. Manufacturing, cooking and heating have been a smaller portion of the total.

UPS/FedEx and USPS go by weight/size/distance. Look on their sites and there is a calculator which will give the shipping cost. As long as you are staying within your own zone, it isn't as expensive. Start going across country and it adds up quickly.

Finding a strong-enough cardboard box to protect a top box is not easy. The manufacturers ship theirs with double-reinforced corner pieces, lots of styrofoam sheets and double-wall outer boxing.
