I already purchased these. However I will consider the Grip-ons when I buy the Locking C clamps that I will need.

I had the idea that Irwin Vise Grips were the original and suppose to be the best around.

Thats a good price however I would stay away from those softgrips as they are a pain to clean and don't hold up very well.

Merkava those grips ons are annoying especially when working in tight spaces. I used them when I worked in a welding shop and after someone bumped into one and dropped a piece of 1/4" steel tube on my foot I went back to Vice Grips for locking pliers.

I don't know why on Earth you would want those for; they are so hard to release and painful at times. I've always hated ViceGrips.

You should've got the Grip-on's.

I have tried a lot of off-brand locking pliers and none I have tried come close to the quality of the original vice grips. So unless someone sends me some free samples of those Grip-on's I won't be trying them. :headshake

Roger that. I have never used any locking plier that worked as well or better than the traditional Vice-Grips.

Merkava: if you're willing to send me a Grip-On to try, I'd be happy to research and perhaps amend my above comment. :D

As long as you have a use for some of the specialty shaped pliers in the set, it's a good deal. At that price, I'd probably get two and eBay or CL anything you don't need or want. I have a few pair of the Soft Grip Vise Grips that I paid about $10 a pair for on average. No complaints except that the soft grip handles are a bit of a pain to keep clean as mentioned earlier.

Can the soft grips be taken off if I decide to do so. Its the same pliers w/ just the grips added .. right ?

So besides offering a whopping # of different clamp shapes and sizes, just what is so magical about these Vice-Grip clones? I've only seen the pics on the website/catalog, but they look like they work and release the same way - with a lever on the handle. What's so wonderfully different and better than the original V-G's?

The axial ones look interesting - if I find myself taking on a project that they'd be worthwhile for, I might just try some.

I'm sure they could be taken off or at least cut off - I've never really thought about it or looked into it.

Don't have any use for soft grip locking pliers. I use them for metal fabrication and the rubber would get torn or burned off anyway. Also don't understand why some are getting their hands/fingers pinched?

On an original Vise-grip you have to push the release lever against the same level it's mounted to. You're supposed to be able to use the back of the fingers to "push" the release but if they're really tight it's next to impossible to do it one handed and so you have to use two hands to pull them apart. When they finally do open it happens at light speed and they don't care if your finger / hand is between them and anything solid. I've seen and done it more than once.

The Grip-ons release by squeezing the release lever towards the opposite lever. It basically takes all the tension off and prys the jaws open when you squeeze the release.

I've got some Craftsman that work like the Grip-ons and I'll grab them if I'm working in tight quarters. For open areas like clamping stock to a welding table the originals works better as they won't open as easy if bumped.

Hip2u77 explains it quite well.

I've never tried the Grip-ons, but by the looks of them, they have the same type of release lever as the Crescents.

The Crescents are extremely easy to use in comparison to the Vice Grips; I'd like to ring the guy's neck who decided to stop production of them.

I'm not seeing a difference in the release mechanism of any of these pliers...

In the pictures of the Crescent, it's extended a bit, but it's still the same style of release lever, which means the same "problem" is going to exist.
