Vulcan Anvil #9

My grandfather just showed me an anvil he bought at a yardsale with me in mind. It is a Vulcan 9 in really nice shape. It has a few chips around the top but they are very small. It seems to have good rebound as well. He said he paid $125 for it. I can't find much information on Vulcan anvils, but from what I can find, I believe it is a 90#. And Vulcans were not very loud ringers. Other than that, I don't know much at all about it. Is $125 a good price?

Assuming it's in good condition (as you describe) that's a very good price. Decent anvils are going for at least $3/Lb now (often more), and Vulcan is a brand anybody familiar with anvils will recognize.

FF: post up a few pictures cause some of us without anvils would like to see yours. you did just fine based on cost and weight, but pictures might help us give you a better idea.

Good price. Lots of arguments on the quality of those. One thing I read on the bad rap they get is that through early 1900's til about '69 they supplied all military bases where they got destroyed and abused so then people thought they were not very good. But it was misuse.

The ones I've had had a pretty thin top plate and hardly any step which ain't so great if you're smithing...
