Water leaking behind the gutter - please help

Every time it rains there is a good percentage of the water that leaks behind the gutter and drips out around the soffit trim. I have made sure that the rain drip is overlapping the edge of the gutter, cleaned them out thoroughly, made sure the gutters are tight and checked for loose shingles. I have even gone so far as to tuck 4" slices of flashing up under the drip rail (see pictures.) All this has definitely reduced the problem but has not completely resolved it. Any suggestions, ideas?

I wonder if the water is wicking in thru the nails.
The flashing I see in the third pic, under the roof edge and over the eavestrough, does nothing I can see.
In the second pic, it looks as if the shingles are back from the edge of the roof edge by about 1/4". That's wrong. You may be able to bandaid by using roof mastic in a tube and putting it between the shingles and roof edge in an attempt to prevent water wicking up behind.
Good luck,

Richard

my gutters do exactly the same thing.
i have stared at them wondering how the hell it happens

Lets figure this out and solve this issue.

Mine even leaks in behind the gutter with a light drizzle..

I would say that the shingles have to be further over the gutter than they are. Slip a piece of plastic flashing under the starter course and see if it gets better. Mine leaks too on one side and the fascia needs to be replaced.

From the pictures, it appears that your roof will soon need replacement. The shingles should hang over the back of the gutter by at least an inch. I'm not a roofing contractor, but I believe that is your problem. The water is wicking back under the shingles.

Look luck with this issue, because it will rot the underlying wood.

I agree with the other posts that your shingles should have more of an overlap. The other thing to check is the slope and drainage. I had a similar problem to yours recently, during a heavy downpour. the trough filled up and leaked between the point where the trough is attached to the fascia. It then ran along the aluminum soffit, back to the structure. I had the company come back that installed the stuff. they check the slope and then suggested we add another downspout to make sure the water can drain as quickly as it is accumulating. I hadn't put one in this corner location in the first place because it is close to walkway. I'm going to add it now to hopefully make a difference. Hope that helps you.

I had the same problem and it was pretty frustrating. I found that the water was actually wicking it's way behind the BOTTOM of the drip edge and up over the back of the gutter. The fix was to pull the drip edge away from the gutter slightly so there was no metal to metal contact. Problem solved! Now if I could just get the joints to seal.....

Are the gutters filling up due to not enough downspout?
You will have to get wet by going up there while it is raining and checkwhere the back up is.

K,
That is not a drip edge. This is what I have on my house and have no problems. The shingles also overhang the edge by about 1/2" additional. Gets the water out about 1" over the gutter edge. I dont know if it would work in your case because the shingles are up too far on the roof.

^^^THIS^^^

Somebody installed rake edge instead of drip edge and then compounded the problem by not overhanging the shingle.

That is edging for the rake. You need this for your application:

This would be better:

Starter course of shingles needs to be tabs facing peak of the roof, and overhanging the edge at least 1/2". if you don't do this, you will see daylight between the tabs, and water will leak behind the gutter.

Over top of the starter course begin your shingles tabs facing the right way, and overhanging the starter course at least 1/2"

That's how I always did mine.

Also start off with adhesive membrane along all the edges of the roof. Tarpaper everywhere else.

I think a little more detective work is needed....Is water going behind the fascia or between the fascia and gutter? Based on the pics, I'm gonna say it is former. The gutters are under the drip edge and seem to be draining well (No indication of standing water/blockage) Looks like a roofing problem, not a gutter problem (coming from the gutter guy who always gets blamed)

Agree with the problems re: wrong drip edge and no shingle overlap already mentioned. Try tweaking the drip edge outward into the gutter, snipping the drip around nails as needed. BTW, If you ever replace your gutters, use hidden screw hangers, not nailers and ferrules.

Often that style of flashing is used when a new roof is installed without removing old shingles. Just my guess.
