Welder Extension Cord To Dryer Plug

Before using the dryer receptacle,kill the power to it,open it up ,and check the connections,as they rely on mechanical pressure to hold the wires in place,corrosion and burned insulation are a concern. In in house,the wall receptacle was getting warm so I killed the power,moved the dryer out so i could access it, and re-did the connections, the dryer ran better afterwards..

WTH is a Welder Extension Cord? What is the differences between that and a regular extension cord for normal people that can handle the amp and the environment it is used in... ?

Searching to a welder extension cord gets you there in one step. Why would you search for it differently?

The only problem you have with doing this is the tool is rated at 20 amps -- it's internals and wire have that rating. In the USA we use plugs to determine what's safe .. in much of the world they use fused plugs of the same design.

There is always a possibility that something could fail in the tool without a direct short enough to trip the larger breaker .... overload the tools wire. You can always attach to a larger amp and have it work .. it's fine until something happens. What not a 50amp.

We had a local house destroyed a few years ago when a floor refinisher attached his sander to the panel box -- something happened and overloaded the cord ... lots of damage

Its basically the ends that come on it and ready made cords are designed for the heaviest machines that come with those ends.

I've got a 25' extension chord I made myself for using my ancient Miller buzzbox thunderbolt. I routinely weld at 100-120 amps without any problems.

I think the extension chord is 10 gauge, maybe 12. I'll have to check. It's that SJOO stuff sold at the home centers.

What gauge is the power chord on the machine? My thunderbolt has 12 gauge and it is supposed to pull close to 47A at full power with like 20% duty cycle. I also have a Hobart Ironman 210 and I'm sure the power chord is 14 gauge and the full amp draw is like 25A. Wire welder amp draw is nothing compared to transformer stick welders.

I would think 12 gauge for the 180 wire welder would be just fine.

The Ironman has a 12, I think they used the same cord as the Stickmates, the HH. that were single voltage. 12 is plenty for the machines but,,,, if I am running cable to these outlets use 10 or better. You can plug a Stickmate or a Tbolt in to a 10/50

RV power cable. 10 ga and 30' long. Found the cable at a garage sale - $5. Cut off the ends, got the correct male connector off Ebay and got the female at HD. Probably $30 in the whole thing.

What is the configuration of the plug on the welder power cord? Or, can you read the wire gage on the welder power cord?

I agree, 10 GA wire for that thing. You can get it at home depot. Need 2 conductor + ground. For "ground contact" wire - this is a 3 conductor deal. I have a similar welder.

Get the MIG kit for it (shielding gas) - world of difference.

You absolutely can use a dryer socket.
