I think I may have made a mistake. I ran 10 gauge wire (actually 3 wire because I had some left over) for my welder supply. It's a Miller sincrowave 185 tig/stick welder. I thought for sure that was what I used in the old shop..10 ga.
I looked at the back of the welder, and I see 52 amps 220V. Whoh! 52 amps? Really? I gotta be goofy here don't I? Do I really need like #6 wire? I don't even think I have seen a Homeline 60A breaker, although I have never looked.
Help a guy with a brain fart will ya?

I think you mean synch 180, if it is in pipe you can use 8 but for a cable you need 6, 6-2 W ground. Yes, there is a Homeline 60A breaker.

What is the duty cycle of the welder? Duty cycle and max amp draw will determine the wire size.

Thank you guys. I did goof. I didn't recall it being that much of a hog. Have to run conduit now, since the wall is up. Oh well. I need to learn how to do that anyhow!

I know you can run 10 gauge for 50 amps for a welder circuit. Just put a 50 amp breaker in and see how it does before running new wire. Unless you weld with the machine cranked ALL the way up often I bet it will be fine.

Tig welders dont tolerate low voltage very well.If its in your garage or close to the house you may want to consider aservice ground rod that is dedicated to the welder,since the hi freq can cause havok with electronics that are on the same service ground. I ran a separate 100a subpanel from the service disconect (4 conducter) then run only my welders off of it. There are 3 breakers,2-40 and 1- 60. The 40's are for the 2 wire machines and the 60 for the lincoln 185 tig/stick.#8 wire for the 40's,#6 for the 60, in pipe.

For some machines you can, this one does not come with a factory cord, the circuit needs to be designed for it. If you are running pipe 8 will be fine.

I see. My experience is with stick, MIG and Plasma cutters, have not needed a TIG.
