Welding Table?

I'm going to build a welding table as soon as my garage is done. I have 4 sheets of 1"x4'X8' for the table top. I'm wondering if anyone has floated the table top using Hockey pucks "Canadian eh!" as spacers from the frame to the table top to take out some of the ring out when pounding? Or is a good set of rubber coated casters the way to go?

I didn't use hockey pucks but I did isolate it with 1/4" rubber sheet. It does take the ring out. My top is 4 x 4 x 3/4 and it weighs well over 400 lbs (just the top) you are going to have one beefy table.

Thnaks, how is your rubber holding up? Has it melted from welding,cutting etc? Has you top shifted while rolling around shop?

Ya the 1" plate I got from work for free, they bought for a project that never happened.
I was going to take it to a place in town we have here and get them to Lazer some holes in it, so I can thread them for bracket,jig holders etc.

I tapped the top and bolted it to the frame from below so it doesn't move. The mass of the top will dissipate the heat from whatever welding you are doing so it doesn't really get hot. Mine has never gotten to the point that I can't put my hand on it. You can see the holes in the pics





I cut notches in two of the corners for some 2 1/2" x 1/4" wall sq tubing that is welded to the legs and bolted to the underside of the top. I can then slip in tools that I have mounted to 2" sq tubes. I have 6 or 7 tools mounted that way and it makes for reqlly quick setup.

Nice table, do you find you move it around alot or does it just sit in the same spot all the time?

The thing stays put nearly all the time. I have actually taken 2 of the wheels off and replaced them with height adjusters made from 1 1/2" bolts so I can level it . I can still move it when necessary because I built a crane that can pick it up so I can shift it around if I need to, I found a good spot for it and that is where it stays 99% of the time. When it was mobile the thing was so heavy that it was no small effort to get it to move and where ever it stopped it never seemed to be level and the thing rocked. You might be able to wedge one wheel if you have 4 casters so it sits stable.
