Where are the pit boxes?

Next race season I want to look bling in the pits and have a pit box. A lot of my friends have them painted up with their car number and sponsor logos. Looks cool as hell. It's a large toolbox mounted on rubber tires usually with a spring suspension, towed behind an ATV or utility vehicle. Lots of storage (around 50,000 cubic inches) and a flat work surface. I've seen Snap-On, Mac, and Matco pit boxes. However my Snap-On guy doesn't know what they are and I can't find them on the website. My friend got his from Snap-On, said it cost around $30K. Would love to have one, if anyone has a part # for a Snap-On Pit Box please let me know.

Thank you,
Robert

That's close, but not quite it. The pit box I'm thinking of from Snap On is a little bit larger than that.

Most of the pit boxes at the local tracks around here are home made. Pit boxes can be bought at racers swap meets and auctions for pennies on the dollar. I know they sold several at a race shop liquidation earlier this month.

I race spec Ford in SCCA. It's the "affordable" class. Go racing on a budget.

Car is $30,000ish. Comes to me in a crate. I have to assemble it and paint it. Figure another $10,000 for paint and finishing touches.

Out west the race tracks are miles apart. A Ford F-350 is what I used my first year. However it just wasn't up to snuff. Had to stay in motels, couldn't haul all my tools, spares, etc.

Now I have a toterhome (Optima built on a Freightliner Coronado) with a 48 foot trailer. Like a shop on wheels. Hauls 2 cars, has a lift inside, toolboxes, yada, yada, yada. That set me back ~ $450,000.

It adds up. Almost not worth it, almost. I may get into a different class down the road. Spending a helluva lot of money to only go 135mph. I'd like to race a Porsche 911 after I get a few bills paid down.

By the way I'm not rich either. Just a regular working stiff. I'm a certified nurse midwife. Being single helps, working overtime helps a lot. My "house" is an old 4 bay mechanics shop I renovated and put an apartment upstairs.

Kinda sad really.

Thanks. But there are a lot of good nurses out there and they should all be your heroes.

Not a lot men in your line of work, huh, Fokker??:lol_hitti

Seriously though, living above an old four car garage sounds awesome to me. Good luck with the racin'.

No, there are very few men who are RN's. Even fewer who are also midwives. When I got my MSN in Midwifery I was the only guy in the program!

It's not bad though. Pays the bills. I work for a birthing center so my hours are weird. Basically I get a client, meet with her, do her prenatal exams, all that jazz. Then when her water breaks and she's in labor I go in. Sometimes I'm there for a few hours, once I was there for 32. Basically by her side until the baby is delivered. Thus I pretty much live and die by my cellphone. When it rings, I book it.

Kinda weird, I'll be up to my elbows in old Ford in the shop, 20 minutes later I'm in a labor and delivery room.

So I dont work a set schedule, pretty much all on call and prenatal appointments in the clinic. Right now I have a woman who was due on Thursday so I'm just waiting for the call on that, plus I have 4 more due next week.

Nice thing is that all my colleagues want time off for the holidays and I want time off during the racing season, so for the winter I take on a lot of work.

Watching Pinks on Speed, surfing the net, tinkering with a FE390, and waiting for some water to break.

What are you up to?

Google 'war wagon'. That will get your more info than pit box. There are normally a few on e-bay as well.
Most of the ones I see at the track are a standard box with a custom built frame / dolly for towing / dragging.

Not really man, you're livin' the dream!

BTW... at one time I though I wanted to be a racer... started with autox. Then I discovered that I couldn't afford to fix things when they broke... ended my "career" really quick,

Almost 18 grand for that Snap On utility tool cart thing!! :shocking: That's insane! For that much I'd buy a gas powered golf cart with a utility bed on it, or a John Deere Gator and fab up some mounts for toolboxes and storage in the bed. Probably still come out cheaper and it would be self powered.

How on earth do you keep your hands clean enough to pull that off.

I like the War Wagon from ISI and the Tire Rack Wagon from pitboxes.com. Hadn't seen those yet. I think the Snap On one I'm thinking of is the 3 banker.

Yeah probably the most important thing I have in my shop is a deep sink with hot water and GoJo. The best for getting your hands clean in a hurry.

Around 3am I was in the shop tearing apart a 390FE for my project Mustang. Course I was covered in goo. Hot tanking parts and such. Then of course the phone rings and I have to go to work. Fast scrub down of my hands and I'm gone.

9 hours later, healthy baby girl and I'm back in the shop. Figure I'll dink around, get the rest of these parts cleaned, and get some sleep. Never know for sure when my next client will go into labor. She's not due til Tuesday, but the one from last night was due on Thursday!

I have been looking at Craigslist for a Snap-On box. I saw this one and could not believe it - $600. Per the prior links retail is almost $18,000. This would be great for moving around my garage. But I thought something is wrong.

http://monterey.craigslist.org/tls/938826183.html

Then from the description I thought it was one of those mini tool box versions Snap-On has, but I have never seen a mini version of a pit box. I keep looking at the pictures to try and determine if it was a toy or the real full size thing.

So what do you guys think - is it a mini or full size?

I will not be kicking myself much if it is a full size. I sent an email and called yesterday, and recived no response. Then I realized the listing is from November 29. If it is full size it is long gone and the seller will not bother getting back to me.

Either the guy taking the pictures is Andree the Giant and has a huge pick up and flower pot or that is one of the mini size collectible boxes.
Plus the add says collectible and small tools in it.:spit:

The seller Andre just called me and said he took the pictures from a ladder, and does have a big pickup truck and a big flower pot. Said he put miniature and small tools in the listing because he is use to working on locomotives. Collectible because you have to pay when you collect the box.

It would have been sort of funny if I had spent an hour driving to Salinas to buy a toy box for $600.
