I will be doing my parents' garage floor soon and they just want the plain grey epoxy coating however since they are in their 70's I would prefer adding some non-skid / anti-skid additive.

Anybody knows which products works good while maintain the durability of the finish?

I remember some people here mentioned that the non-skid additive has a higher risk of hot tire pick-up is that true?

Also, what is the proper method to add the additive?I will be using a primer coat first and one coat of epoxy should I sprinkle the additive on top while epoxy is still wet or should I mix it with the epoxy and roll it on together?

Thanks

Use SharkGrip.

Mix it in with the last coat of epoxy. Stir occasionally.

You can buy SharkGrip at Sherwin Williams. It's all basically silica sand (I believe). Rustoleum epoxyshield also offers an anti-slip additive. As bmwpower suggested, add it to the last coat.

All of the suggestions above are fine... We have a similar material called SuperGrip... However, here is another solution that is better for elderly people.

When you coat the floor, use decorative flakes over the floor... even if you just use gray flakes on a gray floor. The flakes will create a texture that is not sharp. As people age, their skin becomes thinner and 'papery'. If an elderly person falls on a floor with shark grip or sand as an anti-slip agent, it can cut or even rip their skin.

Using flakes to add texture to a floor will also keep it easy to mop!
