Wire Question

Good morning!

I have some wire that connects my garage door opener to the sensor eyes and the wall mounted controll and I would like to reroute it so the path makes more sense in my garage makeover. However, the wire is very skimpy and since I am going to install it inside a wall, I was thinking of upgrading it for future needs since I was going to tear it up anyway.

Does anyone know what gauge of wire I should use for this project?

Can't go wrong with 18/2. If you plan on adding alarm sensors, automatic locks, etc., may as well run 18/4. Depending on your local resources, 18/4 might be difficult to find, so 16/4 would be my next choice (if going with 4-conductor).

Door bell wire.

You can use either 'bell wire' (for doorbells) or thermostat wire. Both are common and inexpensive. 18 to 22 AWG would work well. You could even use some telephone wire, or network (CAT-3, CAT-4, CAT-5, etc.) wire if you wanted. There is no current to speak of, and the voltage is only a few (perhaps 12) volts.
