I am about to install a pool and need to run power from the garage to the pool to run a pump
1 1/2 hp
120 volt
15amp
its a 200ft run
looking to run a UF-B direct burial wire
what do you guys think would be the correct size wire to run,
8-2 or maybe 10-2? 30amp breaker?
thanks

Does this unit come with cord and plug? If so it needs 15A breaker. There are a ton of specialty rules regarding pools, location of recept, etc. Depending on incoming power a 10 may work with 15A run load or less. We need one of the sparkies that is familiar with codes regarding pools, I dont remember all the details. Must be GFCI among other things.

Yes it does have the cord that will plug in a outlet
my thinking was to put a 20 amp breaker in box
run underground direct burial wire 18" deep
to a 20 amp gfi breaker at pump location which will be min. 5ft from pool with a flip down weather cover
also will need to bond the pool to the pump for grounding reasons
I have read that after a certain distance I will start losing volts at the pump if I go to small of a wire

If it is close to the same as a hot tub then you have to have external breaker box, GFCI, another ground rod, etc. Water and electricity combined is a complete different ballgame

A lot of misinformation in this thread. I'm no code or pool expert but I know enough to know the advice here isn't right. I'll mention a couple things I've seen wrong:

You want to know how to wire a pool? Read art. 680 for starters. There is an online version of the NEC you can read at the NFPA website.

Seems everyone thinks they're helping by jumping into these electrical threads and posting what they think should be done. It'd be a nice change if folks would look up the answers rather than just shooting from the hip.

Aceman, I did not ask how to wire a pool, I asked what size wire I would need for such a long run,
I have read Article 680 storable pools..under section 680-30.
so I dont think anybody is shooting from the hip except yourself for not reading
the question that I had asked

Shouldn't 1.5 hp be more around 8 amps if that is the correct hp? I have a 3hp motor I wired up not longer around that was 15amp.

Yeah your right I was thinking 240v, brain farted on the 120v motor.

If you could find the NEC online, that'd be awesome. I have googled it a couple times with no luck.

At 15 A for 20 feet, you are fine with 8 AWG - it will give keep you within the standard 5% VDrop .
