Do they make a wireless thermostat that will measure two different areas and make comparisons and selections? For example, in AC mode the hotter of the two measurement locations is chosen to satisfy the demand while in heat mode, the colder of the two locations is chosen to satisfy demand.
I recognize that this scheme might overwhelm the other room, but I could live with it versus retrofitting a split zone system with dampers and controllers.
I have a bonus room over a garage which is on the same system as my first floor master bedroom. Currently, T-stat is in the master and is blind to what is happening in the bonus room. I have toyed with installing a second T-stat upstairs, and somehow using one for winter and one for summer.
