Thanks for the help so far guys. I picked up a couple of books from my local library and now know enough to be dangerous. I have decided to wire a sub panel off my 200A main panel. What gauge wire do I need to wire this?

thanks!

It might help if you gave the electrical guru's some clues...

Length of the run?

Amperage of the sub panel?

Going to a separate building?

Does it need to be run in conduit?

Any other requirements?

Sorry, I typed that post after a long day. In my head I had provided all the important details.

The subpanel would ideally be 100A, the length of the run about 30 feet (probably closer to 20), and the wiring in a conduit.

You can use #1 cu. for no ambient exposure in 1-1/2" conduit and #1/0's for ambient exposure in the 1-1/2"C. as well.

If the panel is not within line of site of the main panel, you will need to provide a main circuit breaker(MCB) on the new panel.
