Wiring up a 220V single phase drum switch.

I need some help wiring up a 220V drum switch for small Logan lathe I picked up. The wiring was a mess and couldn’t get it out from the back of the cabinet without pretty much cutting everything. It had an old, odd plug on it. The motor wiring is pretty straightforward and has a motor plate and all the motor wires are labeled so I’m confident on that. I mainly just want to confirm the diagram I came up with and I’m not sure if one leg can be hot all the time.

Any help is appreciated.

I've found over time that there a few different switches out there so to say one way is risky. Is there no wiring diagram in the cover of the switch? It also depends on whether you want reversing capabilities.

Post a picture of the motor nameplate. If the drum switch has a diagram on the cover that would be helpful also. Not all drum switches are the same.

I posted the pic of the plate on the motor. It’s a Furnas R44 drum, but there’s no wiring diagram inside, it’s worn off or gone. If I need to buy a new switch that someone can get me wiring for that’s fine too. I just want to get it running. Wired for 220 and reversing, which looks like swapping the C1/C2 wires to reverse.

The switch looks like basically is two L’s when in either forward or reverse. Nothing touches when it’s off.

Your way will work. You don't need to switch both lines. You could also wire it like this if you do want to switch both lines. Then there is no power at the motor with the switch off.

So just wire T2, T3 and C2 together and then just wire the drum as shown? I’d prefer to have no power to the motor when the drum is off.

Yeah. You just wire as shown on the diagram but instead of swapping C1 and C2 to change rotation you are connecting C1 to either L1 or L2 to change rotation. It works because C2 is connected to the center of the other two windings so changing from L1 to L2 reverses the current though the start winding. Works just as well as doing what the diagram says.

Guessing the start switch didn't open once it got up to speed. It's worth noting that this motor does not have thermal protection. In hindsight you probably should have included an overload relay or at least a 4 or 5 amp time delay fuse.
