I have a Craftsman 103.23640 Drill Press with poor runout. This is the 13.5" drill press, considered the "Model 80" if I am not mistaken. Labeled Craftsman. Before seeking a new-to-me drill press, I'd like to try finding a replacement spindle. The spindle is 5/8" diameter, 12-5/8" length, with fluted portion beginning at approximately 8-5/8" from tapered end. There are 6 flutes, each flute 1/8" across flats. Taper is Jacobs 33.
I have isolated the runout to the spindle by removing chuck, marking the high point of runout on the spindle and quill, then removing spindle and rotating 180 degrees before reinstalling in the quill. The runout follows the spindle. So I do not need new bearings or a new quill assembly, just the spindle. The spindle could be longer if the diameter, taper, and start location of fluted portion match (extra fluted portion would simply protrude through the spindle pulley). I am curious as to which Craftsman/Dunlop/King Seeley models have interchangeable spindles.
I would greatly appreciate any help in finding a spindle, as this was my first drill press and I would really like to get it operational for precision metalwork.
