The Carport

Often times, garages become workshops and cars find themselves left out in the elements. The most cost effective solution for this is the carport. Problem is, most carports lack thoughtful and elegant designs. And that got me thinking – we need a thread dedicated just to car ports. A gallery of sorts for people to browse.

If you have images of carports that go beyond the typical metal structure, post them as a reply!

Recently I have grown to appreciate carports for being a showcase of the fine cars of their era. Today they don't seem so appropriate with the econoboxes and SUVs that are increasingly common, but I think they are great for a classic car. Here are a few mid century ones I like:

^This^ is cool. It looks like one of those modular houses. I also love the mid-century models in mtm_motors's post.

some nice piece in this thread.

Some Eichler models have carports in the center.

I'm digging this thread. I have a large parking pad on the side of my house (formally trailer parking) that I want to convert into a carport/patio, and this has given me some really nice ideas.

Pablo, I am with you. I now park a car outside and the oak trees are killing the paint. I need something. maybe one of those sails? the drive goes down to the garage, so it makes it tricky.

There are a few places on base here that have large solar panels in the parking lot to act as overhead coverage much like what PECVD2 posted. I always thought that it was a great idea for the power generation standpoint as well as providing covered parking for cars. Parking lots, for the most part, are a giant waste of space so you might as well get more out of them if you can. They even put low output lights under the panels to illuminate the area underneath at night.

Our high schools have covered parking now as you have described.

I built this carport last year with the help of my dad. I built it to park under during the winter months and to serve as an outdoor living space during the rest of the year. We moved the vehicles out yesterday and moved the furniture back in. TV will be moved back out as well.

Last night.....

I love carports!! When the weather is good there is nothing better than wrenching on a car outdoors, by having a carport you're able to do that without the metal getting hot or getting yourself sunburned. I've always liked the idea of having a detached garage out back of a house and a carport attached to the house. I couldn't find any pictures of just that, but here are a couple examples I like.

As a child in Houston our long low ranch house was blessed with one of the beautiful all metal "carports" which allowed one to park out of the hot Houston heat (great because my parents wagon at the time came equipped with a top of the line stereo but not a/c!). Sadly a hurricane came through and blew it (and our neighbors carport) into the street, trees and various other neighbors backyards.

My current house is a mid century modern that has had the carport enclosed and turned into a garage. It still retains the slightly sloping roofline and the "inside" wall was at one point an exterior wall. I keep trying to find photos of the house before the work was performed back in probably the early 80's...

I work a lot in the older parts of our city. Some of these neighborhoods were pretty nice in their day, but are in a more "blighted" condition now. I always liked these type attached carports on some of the houses. Back when they were new, they may have sheltered a nice new Model A. Or maybe even a Buick or Caddy! Here are a couple samples from today....

I lived in a garage apartment for a while at a house that had a driveway all the way through the lot to an alley. As you drove up from the front, there was about 20 feet of uncovered, then you drove through a gate under a second story extension (sort of a car port) then open again, then a split to drive in to the garage, or out to the alley past the garage. There was a cover from the garage over that section, which was a balcony to the garage apartment, and it has a roll up door on the alley end, so the whole area could be enclosed for working on cars (or carriages, it's an 1800s house) or to keep kids and pets in.

Six million buys an awfully nice place. $100 a month gets you a crummy view in the broken down garage apartment of the nice place.

Those are good examples of a porte cochere. They weren't so much for parking under, they were mainly so you could drop off people at the house out of the weather before putting your carriage back in the stable.

The 22X23 carport was one of the top selling points with the house that my wife and I bought 5 years. It is ugly, but very sturdy. It is made of steel tubing (probably old well stem pipe), steel I beams, and heavy steel purlins all welded together with corrugated tin screwed to the top. I think we could almost park on top of it!

Like coal man, we move the cars out and use it as a patio, and it was a nice shady place to work on the cars before we had our little shop built in the back yard. It is a great place to BBQ in bad weather.

It is located in front of the detached garage, and both are behind the house at the end of a driveway that runs alongside the house. It is nice because it gives us a 100X22 driveway, and there's a secondary cover that bridges from the carport to the back porch, allowing us to walk from the carport to the back door of the house without getting rained on.
