You guys are probably sick of hearing me sing the praises of Lee Valley (They aren’t paying me – I swear it!), but his bounced up and I can’t help myself. How many times have you had a piece of hardware that you can’t quite identify?

“Is it a 1/4-28 or a 1/4-20?”

“It looks like a fine thread… I think…”

If you don’t work in the shop every single day and surround yourself with hardware, sometimes it really is a guessing game.  No more fellas. I’ve always wanted one of these.

These are on back-order nationwide (Canada). I've put my order in yesterday and it's expected to come in some time in March.

This is another product of Lee Valley, under the Chesnut brand.

Looks like the sets I have. Except mine are not mounted on a plate, and the sizes are stamped on each thread checker. Mine are made in the US.

That's goofy, they are in stores everywhere mounted to teh shelf next to the bolts.
Why no fine metric?

Nice, but I need fine metric and up to at least 17. Any idea who would make something with those sizes? I do like the idea of them being pieces and not stuck to some card though.

Glad this was on the front page of the site.
This is something I've been dying to get.. Yea, hardware stores have them, but I still want one in my garage. Especially for as cheap as they are.


Does anyone know of one with fine Metric and larger sizes? Otherwise, I'll buy this set.

The wood box is nice, but pretty unnecessary. Just something that'll gather grease!

I bought the S&W sets as well,I got the bigger set that goes up to 1" sae and 22mm (I think) metric. They have them on E-Bay,but if you go to S&W's website you can get them a whole lot cheaper. Great folks to deal with,shipped them super fast and sent me a follow up e-mail later on to make sure I was satisfied with them.:thumbup:

Rockler sells a set. McMaster Carr has both the sets on strings, as well as sets on boards, which DO go into larger sizes. The advantage that BOTH of these have over the homebrew looking LV sets, is you don't have to remove the bolt to check the threads of a bolt, in its place.

Really guys, how often do you, "just going to set this on the bench for a second" and then have something come up? I think the bolts are going to disappear.

EDIT: Found out the McMaster sets, appear to be the S&W sets above, and the string ones go larger then the board.

I have a set of "Check-A-Thread" They have a nut and bolt of each size mounted in a plastic T frame. Alot of the hardware stores around here have them attached close to there bolt bins. I like it when sorting the bucket of misc. nuts and bolts that get cleaned out of the tractors and equipment. My 6 year old nephew is starting to do the size checking and putting them away.

My sets, which are just like yours, came from NAPA.

I prefer Rockler's Thread Detective. (the ball looking things on a cable). Since it's all attached by one cable you can't lose those small peices when shimmying under a car.

Saw your post and just ordered a set.
Looks like a great addition to the tool box.
Backordered until April 16, bit I am sure they will be worth the wait.

I try, to never stop, at the Lee Valley store, I drive by on my way to work everyday, since all the cool gadgets I'd be interested in, would cause me to never get to work on time.:):willy_nil

Those are older threads ? I use them everyday :)

I would not buy one of those thread checkers for SAE and Metric but BSF metric, I would buy right now, I could really use one of those. Guess I am going to go make one, a metal plate and some bolts threaded to the plate for testing nuts and then some nuts tigged to the plate for testing bolts.
