One Crazy Orthodontist…

This is off topic a bit, but pretty incredible just the same. An orthodontist on the HAMB is absolutely crazy about vintage cars and garages. So much so, that he decided to design his office as a tribute of sorts. He recently finished the project and you aren’t going to believe it. Check out the photos:

Always have been scared to death of the "Dentist:evil:" I've seen and spoke with this one. Maybe the distraction would be enough to get me in the chair?????? Only this one has scalpulls!!

And Dave is a really great guy, I know he has been planning/working on this project for years. It's great to see it come together. Of course, Dave, it will probably be like most car projects, always looking for some way to improve or change it. lol Couldn't be happier for you.

I once had a crush on a chick who was a dental hygentist. Every time I went in to have my teeth cleaned, I ate a bag of Orio cookies. That way, I could spend more time with her...

I'm not sure I would go see him. I want a clean, modern facility, but all I see there is extra expense that I would have to pay for.

It is a cool facility though, just not logical to me.

Thanks George! You are right, there is a long list of things to do and add, signs still need painted, etc. But, that always keeps it changing and new stuff for kids to see as they go along. Looking forward to seeing you at the Stray Kat in a few weeks. I gutted the Merc last weekend, so I will only be a spectator again. :(

And you wonder why braces cost so much?

Braces cost so much because it takes 10 years of school (at a cost of $250k or more) and the overhead is high. ;)

And to think the orthodontist gets to write it all off.

Yes, and no. A fair amount of the stuff is my toys when I was a kid and stuff I have collected over the years that has just ended up here....you know, stuff your wife says you can put anywhere you want so long as you put it in the attic or the garage. LOL. The rest of it I built myself at a cost waaaaaaaay less than buying it outright.

Your point is a valid one and that is the way some people take it and that's ok. Braces, however, is a pretty "clean" procedure and doesn't make the mess that regular dentistry does that requires so much clean up. So, that gives us a fair amount of leeway in decorating that isn't possible in other kind of offices.

So far as extra expense that get's "paid for," that point was brought up on the HAMB and that point is not lost on me, either. I pointed out that here in town, I am actually the lest expensive guy in town, do not live in a big expensive house, do not drive big, fancy, expensive cars, wear a Rolex and the other flashy things that hack folks off about Drs. I live modestly and chose to invest in a facility my patients and their families can enjoy to make the process a bit more enjoyable rather than keeping it all to myself so to speak. Locally, that is evident to most folks in town as they have seen me live and practice here for the last 15 years.

I appreciate all the kind words, and the criticism, actually. Believe it or not, we built this facility on a real tight budget and did a ton ourselves (and continue to)....a budget much less than most folks spend on a "regular" facility as a matter of fact. There is lots of stuff you can do that is cool, different and still within a reasonable budget. Most folks don't think outside the box, though, and miss an opportunity. I'm a blessed man, and that is not lost on me one bit. :D

Very nicely done. I would not hesitate to go see Dr. Dave, as well as bring my three kids there for braces. Of course... I may be able to afford it, I'm an accountant. :bounce:

I believe in capitalism... And I believe a guy should be able to spend his money on whatever he wants.

I also really like the fact that DrDave built something that a lot of folks get to enjoy.

Frankly, I think this building is wonderful.

My orthodontist's office looked nothing like that when I was a kid!

Awesome, nice work.

Cool place Dr Dave. You going to share any stuff with us on how you built things? sounds like you worked hard to build that place, not wrote a check.

I know this is mostly a garage/shop space forum and hate to cross pollinate Ryan's forums. LOL. I did add some info to a post someone started on the HAMB looking for details on building a car couch.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=537419

Towards the bottom of page two I added my two cents and some construction photos of one of the couches. There is a bit more to the desks since I had to coordinate with a cabinet guy and build something he could work with. Neither of us had done anything like this before and had to feel our way along. Basically, the desks have a 1 inch square steel tube frame under the fenders (the couches are wood frame, but if I did another one it would have steel). The cabinet guy told me he pretty much needed stuff that he could build "boxes" to, meaning the cabinetry is pretty much a box, so the framework underneath just squares everything up to fit against that box and the sheet metal is cut/filled to meet those edges as well. Hope that makes sense. I have construction photos of everything and can do a tech of sorts on it in the proper forum, whether that is here or on the HAMB and reference it if you need me to. :)

I believe in MANAGED capitalism. The the unrestricted Friedman type that has put us all where we are now is not good for this Country...good for multi-billion dollar globals, but not for all us regular folk.

I too applaud the Doc. Amazing!

DrDave great office!
or is that garage?
I have installed some neat Orthondontist offices but yours takes the cake.
I wished I could have been apart of it.
Orthondontist offices are always the most fun to install.
Great job!

My bride says I can't find milk in a refrigerator. Regardless, I didn't notice where the orthodontist's office is located. We travel the highways and byways of America in our 66 Falcon Sports Coupe and would like to have our car photographed in front of the office. Where is the orthodontist located?

That's funny! I drove my '54 DeSoto to his office once and went in and asked if he could straighten a crooked tooth in my grille. He laughed and said "Sure!"

I heard somewhere that Gene Winfield was building a new shop. Supposed to look like a Orthodonist's office... :scared:

Sounds a great idea, till your lying in the chair and he comes at you with a snap on air powered impact wrench for your new root canal :lol_hitti

I had two implants done in my mouth a couple of years ago. I was a little dubious when the dentist told me that they were installed at 35 newton-meters! Fortunately, he used much less than that when the time actually came; used a little hand-powered ratchet. Oh, he also used a little red Loctite! (Hope I never have to have them removed with a torch.)

Epic piece of work! Very thoughtful, creative design- I'll be cribbing a few of your ideas in my new shop- thanks!

I'd like to see this put in the gallery, so I can reference it in the future- any help, mods? Thanks!
