The Horologist’s Shop

Another day, another deep dive into a shop space. This time it’s the bench and tools of a horologist who specializes in vintage timepieces. I should say up front, I dabble in this world myself. Or more accurately, I dabble in watch modding. I love taking vintage watch parts, mostly Rolex and Tudor, mixing original components from different eras with a few well-made reproductions (read:fake), and building what I think of as hot rod watches. But this is a whole different animal. This is a guy restoring watches with tools and techniques I can’t even pretend to understand. He’s clearly …

A Cobbler’s Shop

I’ve said it a hundred times, but I never get tired of poking around shops run by people who do work I know nothing about. The specialized tools, the unfamiliar disciplines, the methods that look half–mad-science and half–old-world craft… it all feels a little mystical to me. This morning I somehow slipped headfirst into a cobbler rabbit hole. There’s a surprisingly deep pool of boot and shoe repair channels on YouTube, and I have no idea if this guy is the guy, but I love how he approaches his work. And as a Red Wing devotee, I can’t argue with the end …

A Cynic’s Guide to Black Friday

Is it really a sale if you don’t need a damn thing? And what’s Black Friday supposed to be if you’re not actually in the market for anything? You can probably guess how I’d answer both of those. I’ve never been much of a coupon hound. That said, the last few months of this internet economy have absolutely kicked my ass. Mix together our apparent moral mismatch with the folks controlling the ad dollars, add a shitty economy on top of it, and Q4 would be a bloodbath if revenue was the thing steering this ship. And even though it’s …

The Mini Bungee Hack

I’m guessing this little hack won’t apply to about 90% of you – or at least you’ll think it doesn’t. But if you’re even mildly obsessed with organization like I am, buckle up. This one’s a sleeper. The story starts about ten years ago on a photoshoot. Another photographer was managing all his cable runs with these little bungees from ThinkTank called Red Whips. Basically, short pieces of shock cord with a cord lock… simple, clever, and stupidly useful. I stole the idea immediately. But after a while, I noticed two problems. One, Red Whips are just too big. Great for extension cords, but …
