Summer Slump-

Summer hit and things of course got super busy on the farm but I still persevered on working on the shop. The one thing I forgot to do was keep it updated here, I’ll try to catch up in a few posts.

During the summer we worked on getting the outside concrete work finished up. This included the pad in front of the doors, the porch, a 2ft apron around the whole building and then a sidewalk and patio at the house. 25F72526-27FC-46E4-9BF2-8195EBF85C92.jpeg

It was a 5 man Amish crew that did incredible work. I know sometimes you get lucky or unlucky when finishing concrete but these guys did all they could to make sure luck was on their side. It’s always a nice feeling when a quality job is completed. Also, when I say five man crew two of them we’re not any older than 12 or 13 but that didn’t stop them from working harder than a lot of adults I know.3309BB98-234A-4328-B20F-F8148F846B8A.jpegE04A7FF1-C65F-4B39-A137-4ACADC130577.jpegF98C19DC-FBB8-4C2B-B24D-0EA996331D81.jpeg

We also changed out the car fleet a little bit since the last posts. The black wrangler that was in a previous post is no longer in the stable as well as grand Cherokee, dropped them both to upgrade to a “station wagon” it’s been a pretty slick rig for us and has been perfect for a few trips to Colorado this last winter. 76C9A7B9-E978-4F4C-B312-6ADCCE1BA452.jpeg

GREAT building and flatwork. That Subaru will last forever with decent maintenance. Picked up a '22 Crosstrek last year. ;)
The plan is to keep it forever! The dealer we got it from offers a lifetime powertrain warranty with all of their new vehicle sales. We are planning on testing how “lifetime” it is.

WOW. That is one good dealer. I had to pay extra for a 10-year all-inclusive extended warranty. Anyway, enough Subaru. Post up some inside shots of that masterpiece when you get time.

Fixing Mistakes-

When the main pad was poured we started behind the eight ball. The pump truck showed up two hours late which started in motion what was about to become a bad pour. The one thing I had stressed about the most was the concrete, really hard to get a do over-especially with floor heat in it. We ended up with a finish that had odd pock marks, rough untroweled marks, and a finished product that raised my blood pressure for the last year that I’ve had to look at it.DA0A89B9-B53D-4448-95C6-0E875F85CBEA.jpeg9BF6AD06-98AA-43BB-ADDB-2D2849DB56C1.jpeg975A4D40-2027-4852-9E1D-C515BB217DFC.jpeg

The builder and I both knew it was going to need fixed to make everyone happy. Potentially the easiest would’ve been a coating but someday down the road I’d have to be redoing the coating and not be happy doing that. So, we settled on a full grind and polish job.

The polisher that we got rented was a BEAST. 600 cc’s of Japanese horsepower and over 700 pounds. I started on 30 grit then 70 of a diamond pad then went to hybrid pads running through 50,100,200, then a densifier, followed by 400,800,1500, and then a 3000 grit.

After that I applied a product called PolishGuard and burnished it in.

This is what it looked like after the 800.

And here is the final product

Getting the concrete fixed finally let me feel like I could move stuff in and start to make it a shop. Before I never wanted to get stuff set up permanently because in the back of my head I knew I’d have to take it all out. It was quite the undertaking but it turned out really well. Big shout out to the Sunbelt Flooring Rental location in Rogers, Arkansas for their help in getting all the equipment. They were amazing in helping getting this done.

Bigger than most houses on my block. That building wouldn't fit on the puny lot that I have. :) I'm sorely wishing I'd have bought rural property before the prices exploded. Best wishes with the new structure and all the projects inside!

Gym Gains?

I’ve been slowly working along on getting the gym finished up. I’ve had the electrical ran for a while so now drywall is the big project. Bought a lift from harbor freight to hang the ceiling which worked amazing, would’ve been a huge pain without it. Currently mudding and taping. Posting here so y’all can hold me accountable on getting it finished up. Excited to be able to get a power rack and all the gym equipment. 78E7BBF9-A352-4940-A4E5-35B14F8EE5F2.jpeg3D22C312-B4AB-4A79-BF07-518951D16683.jpeg7366D89C-F4EB-47DA-B25C-E372C4CA298E.jpeg

Constructing Pt. 4

One of the concerns with doing a post frame building was having wood in the dirt. I’ve only ever been around metal framed buildings and was worried about wood rot.

I saw these at a farm show and talked to my builder about them. He has actually used them a few times so we got them ordered for the posts. These are giving me a lot of confidence in having a post frame.

I used them too on my back deck

Floor looks awesome! You could eat off of that! Drywall and mudding **** but keep going it'll be worth it. I'd recommend a wider feathering on the seams to get them smoother. Don't use the screen door looking dry wall sand paper, there's a gray drywall paper that works awesome. Fold it in half for corners and ceiling it gives a great line to cut in for painting.
