I thought that it would be appropriate to include the 1/4” drive Duro Chrome set that came gift wrapped inside the Navy cantilever box. Here it is located in the mostly Duro section. 2CD14BC9-F499-4C75-AD21-5A4EEBE759EF.jpeg
Here it is as received. 9E90D213-A59F-4142-8D00-C8EF6F63478F.jpeg

Now I’m on the lookout for the three Duro marked 8 point sockets to replace the clever wood spacer.

I do not recall whether the top tray is large enough to accomodate the larger size 1/4" drive WWII box. :dunno:
This set has a black DI 1/4S and a black DI 5/16S, but the 3/8S is plated
They're all DI and the tommy bar is in there.

Back in 2020 we found a Dunlap tool rack in the box at a Hayward estate sale. Since the weather has been so cold and windy, a nice warm basement project seemed in order. Here is the set as found.87BF963F-6E7E-4D2F-A6E5-C930E6C9D306.jpeg

My best friend since the first grade is a retired carpenter. He made one of those boxes for me and my next door neighbor. He also made my Plomb tower, to not get too far from the thread title. The box was too nice to use so it houses the cosmoline museum.

Today I decided to move the cosmoline box from the garage to the basement. It was getting slightly damaged and dirty during storage in the garage. Here are several pictures of the box and it’s contents.
Several years ago a collector friend sent me a repack wrench and dared me not to open it. It is still unopened and it started me putting aside others in the box.

Boy that’s a treasure chest full of goodies! My favorite is the box of snappy and plomb hinge handles. What drive size are those?

That box with all the preserved and unused tools is an unusual collection.. It reminds me of the legend of King Arthur and his knights laying secretly hidden and sleeping but ready to rise and fight again when called and needed to defend us from evil.!

Those are 9/32” drive and were sent to me by a collector friend in the UK. The crossbars have proven especially useful. Some of the treasures came from Roy Olson, Tin Medic, Twertsy and Lugz among others.

I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled. I occasionally see small items that would fit in there perfectly 👍

My recent finds at a local thrift store. What process did you use to clean up your square in the last post? This one is in similar condition.

The other finds are a S-K (#45170) 3/8 ratchet and a 3/16” tip Craftsman screwdriver. Both of these also need some paint removal work done. I’ve scrapped the paint of the screwdriver blade.

Nice square, Don.
I have its baby brother also with the rosewood and brass handle but mine was made in New Britain, CT.
If you want it to make a set, let me know.

I found a newer looking one in my Kennedy roller that is the same size as the one I just restored. I also found a no-name smaller one. It also looks like I may have one in my S-K carpenter’s box in the mountains. Maybe we can do a trade?

Nice thing about paint on chrome tools is it's comes off with paint remover in a snap! You can usually get the tool cheap because the pawn shop help thinks it's ruined but 5 minutes with paint remover and it's perfect!

Here's a Craftsman ratchet handle I got for $1. Paint remover and a rebuild kit and I was set!

I put the ruler part of the square in the evaporust overnight. I removed the dark residue with steel wool and a hand metal brush. I used my 3M rotary brush to buff up the steel part of the square until I was satisfied with the results.

I posted this set on the Barcalo thread but it has joined the other similar combo sets in Grandpa Al’s toolbox in the basement. Here are a few more details.

From top to bottom the calipers are Central, General, G&J, Millers Falls and Lufkin.
Between almost constant rain, high winds, cold temperatures and intermittent power failures limiting outdoor and garage activities, the basement has been a relatively warm and dry retreat. I’ve spent some time double checking accuracy of some sets and doing some upgrades. I found a S-K 1/4” drive box with its original numbered label to be included with the 1/2” drive set it was sold with. My best guess is that these sets were sold from 1946 to around 1953. as in "Gormully and Jeffery" ?? (logo attached below)

I thought at first they resembled my "Steelcraft" set.... interesting that G&J made them as well... wonder if that was a promo item? :headscrat

We visited the kids to celebrate our granddaughter’s 6th birthday yesterday. As we were leaving we spotted a piece of furniture on the curb, obviously available for free. I thought it would be useful in the basement to display tools. Our daughter helped us get it into the car.

My wife and I unloaded it this morning and we wrestled it into the basement. After some cleaning and making space it is now the new tower of Thorsen with some room to spare.1E316F95-CC5F-45ED-9F1B-8D6643D5F593.jpegCF7B06E1-2218-4587-A29D-4F70F881B173.jpeg

I stashed a few across the way. I just have the wartime ones in the picture.👍
At an estate sale yesterday we found a couple of items to add to the Gerstner box. Actually, my wife spotted both of them. I wasn’t going to argue. The first item was this nice ruler. 9C17FC64-C049-42DF-8B54-CA422BCC7E49.jpeg51409A6D-4769-477B-963D-0F8030E7119B.jpeg
Here it is added to the box.85AEE06C-98C3-40D9-987C-785B1A727422.jpeg
The coolest item was this 1950 machinist’s booklet from Morse. CF4C91DD-9FCD-4A70-9F66-E821708F18D8.jpeg24A2A839-D298-4141-ABEA-9E38D4F5FB79.jpegA36784B8-E127-4FC4-B32D-E291D2DAD07E.jpeg
It is now residing in the box. 021AD9C1-ADDD-4636-9B88-A52AAD0F8AF9.jpeg

A while back I saw that a fellow collector had drilled holes in some wood to store his perfect handle screwdrivers. It seemed like a great idea so I took an old piece of redwood fencing and made my own. Here is the result.2263BD25-91D1-4830-AB35-809ADBC2A6FA.jpeg
