I learned this lesson already, and you are right on the button.

I created a thread on here about tool boards, and it became semi-popular. Well, wouldn't you know it, I started noticing that whereas I had been the only bidder on multiple auctions for them before, now I was getting some competition. The damage had been done!

I've read somewhere, though I have no idea if it is true, is that 90% of readers on an average forum are lurkers who will never post, but will read. Does this sound normal or reasonable for a figure?

Who knows? But I have noticed when someone posts a really good deal on here, it's often sold out before I get to it :(

Look at the bottom of the main page of the forum... The list is a mile long, but a small group of people tend to be recurrent posters with an equal amount of people posting occasionally.

I don't know about 90%, but I would say that the majority of people on here are lurkers, yes.

Capitalism at its finest.

Huh? :headscrat

Listen, when you get these things, you need to post a pic in the thread I created for tool boards. I can link it here later if you can't find it. I hope you enjoy a challenge. Some of these tools are quite difficult to find.

Sorry to throw a "wrench" into the conversation, but (a) this thread just peaked my (and likely) others interest in these boards and (b) I'm not (as) cheap/frugal/whatever as most of you here!
That being the case, $25 sounds CHEAP, $50 sounds reasonable and $100 would even be do-able for me to buy a few cool boards to decorate my shop....with tools on it I can see going into the $100's - and why not - any new tools would be 2-3x that and not come with a cool vintage display board.
So I'm looking - who's got what?!!

I have three Crescent boards and one Proto that I will probably be sending elsewhere. I'm trying to narrow my focus.

Even for a money-bags like you, shipping costs up to the Great White North might not be so attractive. :lol_hitti

"Money bags" - HaHaHa!!!! You're right on the shipping tho - kills man a deal...

A-ha! See, you aren't willing to pony up the big bucks for these types of boards, either. :lol_hitti

And, you don't have to be. They just don't command that much money. You can find new ones every month on eBay or local classifieds for tens of dollars.

I don't know if we'll fill them up with crescent, necessarily. We're going to hang them in the shop and hopefully fill them up with good tools (channellock adjustables, various snap on and matco). If they don't work well for that, I'll end up hanging up some pegboard beside them and maybe I'll spend time filling them up with matching crescent tools.

Do you have any boards with pegs for sockets? That's one board that's absent in the set I got..

Mixing of the brands, eh? The tool gods weep...:spit:

No, I do not. Not in Crescent I mean. For that brand, I only have an adjustables board, one for combo wrenches, and one for offset box wrenches.

I know, I know. I'm going to tool hell for not being monogamous, but being faithful to just one isn't in my nature.

Honestly, I just like that they organize tools so well and look better than just taking a marker to a pegboard. But, maybe if I have free time after college, I'll start filling them up in a manner that appeases the gods of chrome.

I might be interested in a combination wrench board... But it would be filled with snap on :lol_hitti

Bull, I sipped the tool board Kool-Aid today. Bought 4 Blackhawk boards like you have in your wanted ad along with a couple wooden cabinets for a grand total of $30. I admire your determination to fill your boards with the correct tools. But....my simple plan is to just get mine full of tools. Any "sets" will be of the same manufacturer and odd tools will be filled the best I can. At least I have an excuse now to buy more tools! :)

No no no, don't misunderstand! That price is NOT an example of you sipping the Kool Aid. Paying outrageous prices for boards that aren't worth anything close to them is the sipping I am referring to.

What are the model numbers for the boards you got?

Thanks for the clarification, Bull. :)

My boards are: DBD 6, DBD 7A, DBD 3A, DBD1A

A couple questions if I may......are these boards super-common? The co-op where I do some business has a couple in their shop. What time frame are they from? Thanks.

Nice assortment you have there, then!

I haven't been looking for these specific boards long enough to comment on exactly how common they are. I have observed them to be more common than other brands of boards, though.

As for vintage, I believe we are looking at 1980s or 1990s. Chris (dieseldodge) might correct me on that.

That's a very nice looking board and a nice price. The shipping doubles the cost, but it is a heavy piece and has the chisel holder on the bottom that makes it bulky.

I would say he is not a Kool Aid drinker, not by a long stretch. I'd snag it right this minute if I was committed to my Blackhawk quest.

Nice Proto board here , but the shipping cost looks high to me ?

No personal interest in this for me, no knowledge if the seller is a Kool-Aid drinker...

As the saying goes "It's only worth what someone will pay." A good example is some of the insane deals you see people getting on here on different brand name tools at one store versus another store. Case in point, I was discussing gearwrench wrenches with a buddy of mine and some of the deals I had found. He told me that he had bought a set awhile back that was twice the size of mine but about 7 times the price.

I figured he would have been upset when he heard my price but said I needed them and got what I needed and he's happy with them as well. I've always been told if you think you got a good deal then be happy with it.

I would guess he didn't take the time to do a good check and is trying to price it as if it were in the same category as the porcelain service station signs. The service station signs, even the very small ones, can sell for quite a bit.
Or he may be throwing the price out there in case someone is foolish enough to spend that much money it.

It's a crazy price. A local antique store had a nice Herbrand wood board and it sat in the store for a long time and wasn't even selling for $35.

A fool and his money will soon be separated... (or something like that).

It is harder to find great deals on ebay and I still think there is ghost bidding going on, ridiculous starting prices, and shady deals.

The only way I find them is early morning cheap buy it now prices (these are hard to find) and every now and then I can find an auction that is listed poorly or ends at an odd time.

All the other times I bid what I am willing to pay and let chance take over. You are always a winner if you still have your money.

Ebay's search and alerts are not powerful enough to watch the entire database with precision, I wish there were some "day trader" type tools that would enable someone to find deals last minute.

Bull,

Check out this magazine ad... It incorporates pictures of Blackhawk toolboards from the 20's!
