Does anyone have a Dewalt 20V cut off tool? I was wondering if this would be a worthy addition to the power tool collection when I already have two angle grinders. It looks nice and compact, and the cutting wheel is positioned more for precise cutting like a circular saw. I am a little concerned about how close your fingers would be to the cutting wheel - this thing is small. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09TB7M842/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I don't have too many Dewalt tools... but I am silly with Milwaukee M12 tools. I actually own 2 of their 3" cutoff tools.... One of which I modified with a kit from eBay... that converted into a 1/2" Belt Sander. It's wicked useful. The cutoff tool is used often as well. I own probably 30 M12 tools. I only own about 6 Dewalt 20v.

I also have an UNUSED 20v Dewalt angle grinder sitting in the back of my grinder cabinet. Just never got used to using it. I prefer a PLUG IN version.

I have a pretty even split of Dewalt 20v tools and Milwaukee m12 tools. I bought the m12 cut-off tool with the intention from the beginning of doing the band file conversion but I did try it out as a cut-off tool before I did the conversion. I wasnt super impressed but it was primarily because it felt underpowered compared to (for example), an angle grinder. That said, the usability and features (like the dust extraction) were cool.

Fast forward to a couple months ago and I saw the Dewalt cut off tool crush the competition on a torque test channel episode and I though lt it might be a nice addition if it can overcome the power deficiencies I noted with the M12.

I saw that comparison. I don't use an angle grinder that often, but can't it do the same thing the cut off tool does, but just with more power? The advantage I see with the cut off tool is the cutting wheel is attached like a circular saw being vertical as opposed to horizontal on an angle grinder, so it may be easier and more accurate in making cuts.

Dang it... I looked at the Dewalt Cutoff tool too... It's in my wish list. I'm getting a $100 gift card soon... I may pull the trigger and convert my 2nd M12 to another belt sander... Freaking GJ... is free... but expensive sometimes. Thanks Geo

You have a link to the belt adapter?

For me it's more accurate because I can HOLD the cutoff tool better... in a more controlled execution of the cut. I cut sheet metal with the M12 cutoff tool... anything bigger... like 1/8" strapping... I usually pull out the portable band saw.

Found it... dang that took some googling...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/274450561719?hash=item3fe6873ab7:g:S6cAAOSw7ltgwOyI&amdata=enc:AQAHAAAAoFgFEioTaMdlqpitwpWSQW815VKdIBSINZONtDudUhjEbBeRXSvkGzPZHDTiDZBN+Tl7NK7yw0qvAcNEsP+QB1JC0TBJyNhID8+E7WwOAfUjvLWQI3sIuHKHknPYTiOAeb614AJKhIL4zomVuKsxA/vf3AzrZkzZiucfhtdg+4mjnqA5seDLZgVgYZC+tzpO8FcTlvQrG5JoO+g9Hga3Q5Q=|tkp:Bk9SR_7xtuPXYQ

So you know... this is how it works...

You buy an M12 3" Cutoff tool
You buy an AIR POWERED belt sander
You buy this eBay Adapter
You take everything apart and end up with an M12 Belt Sander.

Milwaukee now makes an M12 Belt Sander already done for you...

I’ve been wanting the Dewalt cut off tool for a few months, I finally bought it a couple weeks ago. I am heavily invested in the Dewalt cordless lineup so it seemed like a natural progression-even though I keep three angle grinders with cut off wheel, grinding disk, and flap wheel at the ready.

I do like the tool, and it seems easier to use on small work than the grinders. There are some Dewalt cordless tools I have purchased and rarely used (lookin’ at you angle drill and portable fan!) but this seems like a handy tool. I don’t think it will do anything I can’t do with an angle grinder, but I think it will do some things easier and with more finesse.

I have 4 Dewalt angle grinders including 2 18v I use with adapters, a 20v max brushed and a 20v max brushless. I keep a cutting wheel on one, a grinding wheel on another, a wire wheel on a 3rd the 4th I just set up with stripping disk. I also have a 5th if you count a corded Craftsman I no longer use. I find the angle grinders very versatile and suitable for all the tasks I ask of them. That said, if I was going to do a lot of cutting only maybe I would consider one. I thing you will be giving up some versatility but could be gaining some efficiently or ease of use with a task specific tool.

I use a Dewalt die grinder with a 3" zip disc. More versatile. Or an angle grinder.
I have both the M12 and the DeWalt 20 Volt being discussed and for certain autobody applications they are better but in most cases I think you're right. The downside is you don't have a guard with the die grinder but if you buy quality cutting wheels (Pferd, Metabo, Walter, SAIT) I've never had one explode. The advantage of the die grinder is you can see exactly where you're cutting (because you don't have a guard in the way) so wear a face shield.
