Not an AFCI.I think an arc fault breaker would have tripped, as they have a little computer in them and measure both the outgoing and return current. If there is a mismatch between the goes in and comes back (due to arcing in an attached device), the breaker will trip.
No that is what a GFCI does not an AFCII believe breakers are primarily protecting the circuit wiring (hence their full name is circuit breaker). Specifically, they limit the current to prevent the insulation from breaking down. Faulty connections at an outlet can generate heat and sparks and not exceed the trip rating of the breaker.

But if a loose connection increased resistance and I2R losses generated heat untill the plastic melted, then no breaker would trip, until the melting caused a short circuit.
