Hello! I've never had my own garage before, I've always rented small places that were more storage than anything else. My wife and I are moving into a place that has a nice 24x24 detached garage, and at 32 I finally get to create my own space. Pictures are rough and not everything from the previous owner is cleaned out, however, the compressor says.

This is from the front of the garage to the back wall

I won't dive into any real plans until I get it cleaned up and we're done moving. But, I'm beyond excited.

Not much to update, still cleaning stuff out of the garage since it was the dumping spot for everything when we moved. I was left behind a compressor, bench grinder and an old stick welder.

Cleaned out enough to back my truck in to see how much space I have with a vehicle in. My wife's jeep will most likely claim that spot as the other half I'll probably put my long term project on.

Cabinets, speakers and everything comes off the walls this week in prep for paint. Previous owner was a smoker and it shows on the peg board. Planning just to paint it all black and go from there. Then next up is new lighting. Also, there is an oil furnace in the garage currently which I'll most likely remove and put an electric ceiling unit in from Lowes. Thanks for looking !

That compressor is a score!

Try not to get in a hurry and do the painting right, this is the best chance you have to get **** out and everything painted before you fill it up.

If the smoke smell is strong, be prepared to use a heavy stain blocking paint like Kilz or similar.... if the store is very far away buy extra and return unopened.

Personally I would also paint the ceiling. It's impressive how much brighter and larger the space feels with the ceiling painted. If painting walls a dark color, be prepared to put more lights in, you could do a light gray and get more "grace" in covering stains while not requiring as much additional lighting

I'm definitely taking my time as I don't want to do things twice lol I'm leaning towards black only because I know me and hand prints will end up on the walls, and I want to mitigate that as best I can. Smoke smell is non existent now, thankfully.

Dark colors will need a ton of light. Maybe use pallet wood for the first 4'-5', then paint the upper part a lighter color. adding pallet wood makes putting shelves easier at that level.

Following! My garage is a new build but the same footprint, so I'll be curious to see what you do with the space (and steal any of your good ideas!)

Hoping to remove the rest of the clutter, shelves and speakers this weekend. Hopped on SmartDraw to give myself an idea of the layout I want.

The wife's Renegade will be parked in the garage while my daily sits outside. My 71 c10 will reside on the other half of the garage. I think If I play it correctly and utilize my 2 outdoor sheds for storage I can keep the garage clutter free and relatively spacious.

Nope.

Quick note, My parents live literally next door, so we share a driveway. I knew the previous owners since I was born, my assumption is since the driveway is actually my parents the door that faces the driveway was placed there to make it easier getting in and out, while maintaining the property line distance. The one on the side, no clue.

I'm doing my research here and I'm not trying to break the bank when it comes to lighting. What is everyone's recommendations ? I'd like to go with Strip lights, my plan was to do 3 sets of 2 lights spread across the ceiling evenly.

Loads of potential and great story - awesome being close to home.

For the lighting, I picked up these on Amazon - pleasantly surprised with their output. Price has gone up since I purchased mine (just shy of 10 bucks a pop vs the now almost 12 bucks):

Put 5 in my side shed:

And about a dozen around the parameter of my 18X24 garage (already had six fixtures in the middle that I had gotten from home depot years ago):

I've had them up for about 6 months now - we'll see how they perform overtime but according to the reviews, they are set for a while. Hope this helps!

I made some little progress today while the wife was at work. I removed the shelves, speakers, and makeshift port-a-potty in the corner of the garage.

My goal is to get one thing done per day. The Center of the garage is slightly cluttered now with garbage but not too worried. I'm going to clean the walls this week, then figure out my plan of attack for painting. After painting, I want to get the lighting done. Those are my two main goals for now - Paint & Lighting.

Picked up some lights from Amazon.

Made a huge difference. Planning on adding 2 more where my toolbox and workbench will be on the opposite side.

I also took down the little storage shed off the side of the garage.

Trying to be patient as things go. The inside still being a mess drives me absolutely bonkers. However, some progress is better than none.

The side of the garage where the storage shed was is where my Silverado will mainly be parked. But also allows me to “loop” the property if needed and proper access to the woods.

As for the inside in that area will be a little “home gym” for myself and the wife. I’ve always wanted a place to open a giant door and work out in the fresh air lol

I really like that odd location extra door. Going to be great for breeze and natural light when you are working!
I've always been a fan of multiple doors, not just on the front of a garage.

Getting a quote today from a painter who my brother uses for his rental properties. Going to just redo the walls in white and call it a day. Trying to remind myself I'm renting and not an owner of this place (yet) so I don't want to go over the top with what I'm doing. I just want to clean it up and make it mine, while maintaining some cost efficiency lol

Anyone have any tips on removing dust and dirt from the garage floor that doesn’t involve using a leaf blower that covers everything in said dirt and dust. ? Lol

Grind and epoxy coat.

Also echo the posts about light color wall paint.

Small updates. As life comes at you fast and hard lol Removed the old oil heater and "entertainment" stand. Moved the welder out of the garage for now as well. Started painting the walls and while it looks better, it is still rough, but this isn't going to be a show room so from 10ft + she looks good. Also Installed a fan.

looking good , my garage is 20x20 and can only get one car in at a time, but I am able to keep both cars under cover the one thing I have nearly finished is getting every thing on wheels just one more shelving unit to go it has made a word of difference for cleaning and making space to do large jobs especially with the work bench

Picked up a cheap whiteboard from Walmart and Hung the free extension cord reel I snagged from work. Dragging my feet with painting the rest of the garage. Hopefully I find the motivation to get it done this week.

finished painting. Finally. Also realized one of my outdoor sheds had a workbench in it I could steal.

Next is to hang the TV, reorganize a little bit and some electrical work to be done. I may paint the secondary garage door. Not sure yet.
