Anybody recognize this die wrench?

Coworker's kid got an old partial tap and die set(Greenfield 1-1/2 & 2-1/2 NC from probably around the 50s) from his school when they were cleaning out old inventory so he brought it to me to clean up and figure out what's missing to potentially try completing it someday.

This piece was in it but while I know it's not part of the set I don't know anything about it. It's 1-1/2 inches in diameter, has no markings, has a hole(not threaded) in the side on the circular side, and has a set of three T posts on the bottom like a lathe chuck.



(Also in background is a Champion B&F Co. and Greenfield OK 1-1/2 dies for scale, plus they were part of the more interesting stuff in the box)

Found it. Ace Hardware. Tried Google Lense and it actually worked.

It had a plate that screwed on using basically T nuts. Don't really understand the point though to be honest. It was just a plate matching the center hole in the wrench.

I have a vintage tap set that had patented centering plates to make sure you were perpendicular to the shaft.

Look like it would work anything like these?

Anyone collect vintage Taps and dies?

Nice looking set, Steve. I’m glad that you bumped this thread. When I cleaned out Grandpa Al’s old toolbox I found a big rusty tap. After a bath in the evaporust I found out that it was In really good condition and a desirable brand. -Don

Here's the link to the set showing the plate. With how thick the thing is overall I don't see the plate providing any help with keeping the wrench perpendicular but I think it does kinda look like the plate some hex die wrenches have too(at half the thickness).

When you rotate the plate, the T-nuts slide in towards the middle and can be set to match the diameter of what is being threaded, so as to guide it straight into the die. Once set to the desired size, the little thumb nuts get tightened down.
