damn pry bar

today i saw my life flash before my eyes as my mayhew dominaotr failed miserably.

i was changind springs on a 96 neon when it started to bend/bow then BOOM the spring flew accorss the room and went outside

thank god noone was hurt

i don't understand what happened is was a 48" bar and it's useless now

will sears take this back ?

Sears doesn't sale Mayhew in store so I doubt they will warranty it.

misuse of tool isnt covered they make spring compressors for a reason and struts are like a bomb unless done right

I mean I got to say..It is a tool for prying...but a spring? A guy did something smiler a few year's ago up the road at a kenworth dealer and it took a guy in the chest and killed him.

I installed Heavy Duty 454 Big Block Front Springs in my '66 Chevelle when I was about 16 years old with none of the correct Tools. I had to prop a 2x4 from the Fender to the Ceiling in my Garage to stop the car from lifting as I was compressing the Spring. If it would have let loose I would have died.


There is a reason why they sell a "Right Tool for the right Job...".


I am glad you were not hurt but add a Spring Compressor to your Tools if you are going to be compressing Springs...Please?


I have a McPhearson Strut Compressor which ***** balls and I have a really good one called a "ClamShell" style. It works Flawlessly.

I would only ever buy this style again. The other style is for the birds. Multiple documented failures even when used properly.

ugh i hate coilovers. Personaly I would much rather just go ahead and get the entire quick strut. I had to change the coil spring on my girlfreinds malibu. but all and all after taking the time to remove the strut. compress the spring (wich by the way you should use proper tooling because thats alot of force) get the old spring off and put the new one on. why not just go ahead and throw a new strut in there? car will handle much better and the work load will be much reduced

He was inside a shop, not on a call. No one can change a front strut spring with a pry bar.

He was probably trying to open the rear suspention to insert the spring back to its place.

Regardless of what he was doing a Mayhew pry bar should not break! If he had had a 6 ft cheater pipe on the end of the bar, then yes. Prying on a spring of trying to lift a building does not matter. The force exerted on a 4 ft bar by an average man should not cause it to bend or break. Bad material for sure. Yes, using a pry bar to install springs is a bad idea.

To all the people who are blasting this guy for using a pry bar as a pry bar i say this:

There are better tools for doing the job but many times if you don't have the exact right tool you improvise. I've done some really radical stuff at the time I was doing something when I didn't have the exact right tool at the moment. Sometimes the tool wasn't available local or the tool truck didn't have it and you don't want to see the job go to another shop. It's a common thing with real auto technicians and the reason so many technicians Invent tools to do the job. Sometimes we invent that tool because we got injured or near injured at one point. If you are any kind of tech at all you never let having the right tool stop you from getting the job done. Personally I install a lot of coil springs with a prybar because iit's fast. I do however use a saftey chain in case it decides to achive flight.

I go by this rule: use the right tool for the right job.Using the strut compressor would of eliminated that.Been finding out there are complete strut assmeblies that much cheaper to install.Comes all assembled with a new strut plate and spring also with a new strut.This saves time and money buying the strut plates and springs including the struts seperately.

I almost had one fly apart on me once,a rear strut on a Dodge Stratus,the strut plate corroded away since it was made out of aluminum from the factory.There was nothing left of the strut plate,fell apart..

No I still chain coil springs as well! Chain it then chain around the frame then lock it all together with big bolts or pad locks it has saved me a lot of anxiety
