My wall insulation is ~ 80% finished, but I haven't gotten to the vapour barrier, and the ceiling is still open with roof and soffit vents letting in outside air.

I can hardly wait to have it buttoned up.

I know your pain. I cannot complain too much my shop is pretty well insulated, it costs me $50 in the winter for utilities, and in the summer it stays about 75 in it, even when it's 100 F out.

Agreed. Yesterday our high was 93 and everyone was talking about how cool the weather was. I guess it is all relative.

Its funny, all winter we laugh at you guys for complaining about cold, and all summer it is the opposite.

Yup, that's some typical upper midwest temperature extremes. Personally I prefer the lower end of that range. It was 93 or 94 here yesterday which is bad enough, but combined with the humidity the heat index was something like 105.

Ah 68, perfect. As I get older, I must admit I like a bit more heat and feel the cold more than before, but I guess I'm just a prairie boy. Last year we returned from a winter vacation in Hawaii, got off the plane when it was 18C, and my first reaction was ahhhhhh, cool, I'm home! I much prefer wearing a light jacket to being drenched in sweat. I mowed grass for about 45 min in 30C and 70% humidity a few days ago, and once my clothes were like I put them on straight from the washer except it was my sweat, I said "stooooopid me" and came inside.

I'm very curious how the garage will behave once it's fully insulated. I'm glad the builder used 2x6's instead of 2x4's for the garage, as R22 Roxul should be noticeably better than R14.

You can be sure it will be a lot warmer in winter and cooler in the summer. That is my findings and I only did the walls, ceiling is all open. The garage was constructed (probably a 60's Beaver Lumber kit) with 2 X 4's, I added 2 X 2's to get the full benefit and covered the interior with (salvaged) 1 X 10 pine boards via Japan (another story).

it'll make huge difference, you'll love it.....I don't think you'll have to worry as much about AC as a heater..do you have NG available ?

Yes, NG is available, but I'm having to think carefully about it. I got a rough quote of $3000 to install one NG unit heater with all the piping. Electricity is 6.5 cents/kwh, so I could install multiple 5 KW unit heaters and do it myself. It would take a long time to pay back the cost of NG as the operating cost isn't that much lower. I haven't decided yet completely, but I'm leaning towards the electric option.

I talked to some of our local racers that had been to a drag race in Tulsa. Said the Heat Index was 118F on Saturday and the track temp got to 180F. That's warming up. We're up 9" on rain with a lot this month. I saw 105 heat index yesterday before mowing the yard and it should get worse by the weekend. Which is why we busted it on the yard, Friday we may go hide behind an ICEE and a big popcorn at the movies. We have a two day race next weekend - it's going to be a scorcher.

My new shop will be fully insulated and heated with a 5K electric heater. That should be more than enough to warm up a 20 x 22.

I just came in from 3 hrs of mowing. 2h on the tractor and 1 hour using my Lawn-Boy to trim and to do the septic mound, as the tractor is too heavy to go on there. It's finally overcast and 21C. Yay! The 84% humidity is too much though.
