I'm really not sure how Parker numbered their vises but I do know that my older 434 1/2 has solid pins holding all four jaws and the two "A" Parkers both had roll pins. That 474A said New Britain CT on the side, and Union did make Parkers for a while. Its anybody's guess.

This Parker says "Meriden, CT USA"

Hi Mitch, no, and my guy won't make them. he said they are too labor intensive. I'am trying to gather up some Parker data on the regular jaws. I know the channel on the 434, and 974 and 435 are all the same size except length and pin hole position. If I could have some of the guys get back to me on the inside channel of their jaws, my guy could make a 7" jaw and if all the channels are uniform, they can trim them and drill mounting holes. Those jaws are rounded on top and funky..

Here is my contribution. $35 Parker / Union from Craigslist. Thought it was a Parker but found out later that it was actually made by Union Manufacturing.

Before I "restored it":

I'm trying to figure out what dual sport bike you have up on the table. Kind of a dual sport junkie myself...

Oh, the vise is nice as well!

Gee, a great find on that 1755, hopefully, just some surface rust and it should clean up nicely. Mitch turned me on to this color, and I think he came as close as anybody to the Tradesman color. Hammered Verde Green

http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/6/3/3/6/0/8/webimg/393897891_o.jpg

Everything works freely, just surface rust. From the looks of it I don't think it was used much, just sat around.
Thanks for the link to the paint.

Hey pfbz!

I'm currently rebuilding a '94 Yamaha TW200. I'm documenting the build on this thread if you'd like to follow along or see more pictures!

jwitt , those are a lot more useful than you think. Perfect for holding small diameter material to grind to a point , small items to be buffed , etc. Some even have a hollow handle to allow long pieces to pass through.

What do you reckon a fair price is for a Reed 4C without the swivel base?

You might have a rare one there. There's no doubt that is a Wilton Tool Co. vise made for Acme of New York. I've never seen one before. That can make for a beautiful and rare restoration.

So being a smart-*** doesn't pay off yet again!

I was bragging to my buddy that I know a lot about vises, since I read the garage journal vise thread...

So he says "OK wise guy, whats this?"

well it's a .. um maybe it's a ... oh **** I don't know.

So I ask you O' vise wizards, what is it?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/skipskip/sets/72157624516459419/

5 inch jaws opens to about 8 inches, swivel base, seems to weigh about 100 pounds.

No name that I can find.

jaws don't seem to come off, but I am not sure about that.

thanks for the help

picked this one up today for 20 bucks. no markings on it but it looks old. it was pretty rusty with about 1/8" of paint on it. took a pic after i hit it up with a wire wheel. would love to know more about it. 5" jaws.it works great and feels very solid.

vise.jpg

I picked up what looks like the exact same vise. Had a sticker on it but couldn't read much. It said 120MM, what looked like "Intermark Guilderland NY" which apears to be an importer.

Here's my vises.

1. Small Littlestown vise "No 112" $5 invested after selling wood workbench it was mounted on.
2. Rock Island 571, my latest find at flea market 2 days ago. $20
3. Unknown swivel vise, probably Chinese. $25
4. 5 1/2" Craftsman, made in USA, bought new, had this one for about 20 years. Mounted on stand made from old sink pedestal. Use this one a lot.
5. 4 1/2 Sears vise, probably Taiwan made. Came with the workbench.
6. Small unknown vise, the raised emblem reminds me of a rocketship. Anybody know what it is? My old eyes just can't read it. Came on a workbench that I believe I paid $20 for, recently sold workbench for $15, kept vise.

It looks to be a 400 series Reed, the pin in the back pulls out and you can angle the rear jaw.

Sometimes that name is right behind where the swivel pin for the jaw should be. Since its on the back edge of the anvil sometime the wording gets crushed. Mine was identical and also had no name. The jaws were fordged on.

I recently stopped at a garage sale and seen a vise like that. It stuck in my mind because of it's size and the stud behind the rear jaw like the one in your photo. This guys's was a Prentiss that was made in NY and was labeled just behind that stud on the flat top just before the back edge...

I'm going to say Prentiss too. The lead screw knob is quite long, which is a feature of early Prentiss vises. The collar is missing btw.

Won this Anvil Vise off of Ebay this past May from a gentleman in Canada. It's the first one I've seen with repositional jaws. The jaws can be set up as a normal vise or positioned right before the horn on the anvil for wide parts. I've not had the chance to clean or use it yet. I was only home long enough on R&R to pull it out of the box look at it and then put it back in the box.

I have a couple of other vises, will have to see if I can find pics of them.

Just found these pics of the vise / RailRoad rail anvil I made into a bench top mount. Drilled multiple holes along the length of the bench mounted tube so that a locking pin could be inserted to either have the vise or the RR rail anvil on top and slide in an out from the bench. It's for light work but does the job, very well. Doesn't show it in these pics but I drilled a hole then welded a large nut on top of the tube mounted to the bench then made a T-handled bolt. This allows me to tighten down on the pipe inserted into the bench mount, securing the vise at any angle I want. Helps greatly with welding projects.

I think it's time to take the thread in a new direction. No vises without including vices...

Is that a C-1? How do you like it and what made you choose that over say, a tradesman (1755) or machinist (450s) model?
