Is there a thread here for tips, tricks, complaints about selling (anything) online? I'd like to get rid of some things, but am intimidated by some of the things I've read (here and elsewhere).

Mike
@mikeinri I was thinking the same thing. @Smokeshow69 @Old Radar or any other regular members, thoughts? Is this the correct thread or is there another thread where discussion of buying and selling garage sale type items more appropriate. Perhaps a new thread? For full disclosure, while I just plain enjoy seeing, sharing and discussing what others are finding in garage sales/estate sales, I also use it as sort of an accounting record of what I acquired and how much I spent.

First attempt at suckage.

Picked up a pickup bed of stuff but here’s the better stuff. A ton of rusted vintage tools from IH, Ford, Deere, Studebaker and Nash. Four cream cans and four big crocks. A bunch of galvanized buckets and wash basins. Only one little implement oiler so I was kinda bummed about that. Two fire extinguishers that I haven’t ever seen before. $250 for the whole lot, farmer was just happy to have it gone.

Why in the hell would anybody do that?
Last month my significant other gave me the green light to move from buy-to-keep to buy-to-sell. Going back through my posts I know I spent $600 in April and from fleabay I know I netted $630 so I'm $30 to the good, plus $2000 worth of listed items and a handful of other pieces I'm still working through.

Personally, I've found the treasure hunt, research, cleaning, marketing, pricing and selling of precision vintage gear one of the most satisfying "jobs" I've ever done in my life. The selling for $ is only a minor part, but necessary to justify the $ out. In other words, it just allows me to acquire and appreciate a LOT more neat things without having to worry about storage and cost.

As a Garage Sale Host Emeritus, I'll jump in here while Smoke is busy at work. This statement could easily be construed as Solicitation. Solicitation is illegal in most states and definitely frowned upon in this thread. Consider yourself accused, tried, convicted and sentenced to read (apparently for the first time...) Post #1, The Rules of the Thread.
Next Case.

^^^ I agree wholeheartedly with the short-term rationalization of a single purchase.
But on your next sale you could hit it really big and win the respect and adulation of everyone on the thread along with 6.022 x 1023 *****!
Now average the two sales and you're still a winner over the longer period. I usually gauge my win/loss record over the calendar year so I, like ctuai, like to keep records. You're not a bad Old Man, Roger if you don't, you just don't know how good you are!

So it's curbside shopping season here. A local township HATES scavengers (people like me) so much that they are compressing what used to be 5 weekends of picking (5 zones in town) into 2-1/2 weeks in Mon/Tue and Thur/Friday.

We got pretty much skunked over the weekend but hit it pretty good tonight.

I call my big find "D_36". 2 pairs of Cerwin-Vega Model D-9 speakers from 2 houses in the same neighborhood. The cabinets are a little rough - probably mostly damaged by the ungrateful kids moving Mom and Dad's stuff to the curb.

Set #1 (right in pic) the woofer foam is fine, but one of the woofers isn't working when tested. Hopefully it's something simple in the crossover.

Set #2 (left in pic) the woofer foam is shot but all speakers work.

CV_D_36.jpeg

My plan is to flip them - I don't have room for these monsters. Maybe their was a really good travelling salesman for C-V working the neighborhood back in the day?

Another great find is an unused 10 x 10 canopy - pretty much new in box. It has the 4 picture window side curtains in addition to the top. Mrs No_Garage is in an outdoor craft show in 2 weeks so this was a timely find - saves us from borrowing from the family.

I also found some of the plastic trays Snap On sells you sockets in, with the plastic cover and magnet on the bottom. I figure I'll extract the magnets and see if they are usable somewhere.

Cheers

Jim

Back on the 1st Sunday of April, I posted of a box of sockets, finally got around to sorting thru them, between work travel, and work just being a bear, sitting down and doing detailed work on the computer just wasn't happening right away.

Here is the details of the box. Inside the SK box was a set of 3/16 - 1/2" 1/4" drive sockets (40906 - 40916), missing 5/16 and 11/32, which I appear to have matches for in the garage. Also included was 3/8 - 11/16" (45112 - 45124) missing 1/2 and 3/4", plus the 1/4" adapter. Sitting inside the box left are 6x P&C, but only 2@5/16 & 4@11/32" (notice a pattern here?). Also inside the box are the members of the Snap -on contingent, a flare crows foot, 3x impact sockets, 1 flex and 6 bit drivers.

Outside left is a Thorsen Taiwan Universal, formerly wrapped in masking tape, a KAL 5/8" crowsfoot to got with my 1/2", the craftsman contingent two Torx, a flex and a 12pt socket. Far right is the Proto Plomb family, a Plomb 1/4" WF25m, Proto 5012 3/8" deep & 52205/8". Missing from the class picture were the class clowns, KD E6, E7 & E8 external Torx sockets, with 2005 & 6 hang tag dates

The box was originally owned by Wong, L. from the Weapons Dept X-31. I suspect this box was a dumping ground, as there are different owner's initials on the sockets.

Sorry for the late and disjointed follow up, but had to share. The SK stuff will show up in the appropriate thread later.

I took a drive to my old stomping grounds near my mom's old house for a HS Flea that does well. Some prices are stupid high, but I just leave those behind. (2X today)

Right off, barely out of the car I found a plastic sewing box full of stuff and a fair amount was older. I wanted the oil can and the green box of attachments (Should fit my Feather Weight 221 Singer) and he said "take the whole box for $7" So I did. These are the keepers, I tossed about 1/4 of the total pile and another half went to the ladies of the house, I kept the wood thread spools and the colors I would use more commonly.

3 50's Lyman loading books $5 each ;

$15 bass plugs ;

11 of them all wood core, but for the 2 in the upper right - A coupl surpized me, the paint looke dlike plastic, but had chips that showed the wood core.

$10 Dunlap wrenches, Vlchek Pliers; $1 small marine pulley; $1 Oak Leaf Wire forming pliers; $7 Sharp EL-5100 programmable Calculator (Works! -Buying a bit of my past, as mine finally died, so I'll get new batteries for this one - I used to program the calculation for designing printed and etched resistors with it. I don't need it now, but I like having it. ) $4 10X (I think) prism monocular, & 1/8" Proto combo - that one may be my smallest now? I need to check;

$15 Wards Deluxe Quality Anvil/Vise 3-1/2" jaws, 17-3/4 lbs, good for light hobby use, and that's what i'll do with it.

I used to keep a spreadsheet that tracked what I paid at each pick and then what items I sold, and for what. I fell away from that habit when my picking rate dropped a few years ago. However, it was proof positive that I was coming out even or slightly ahead on this hobby/past time/compulsion.

BTW, as long as we're on the topic, I've already flipped that tattered, paint-peelin' Snap-on Rollabench I posted a couple weeks ago for 40% more than I paid for the whole lot. Via Facebook Marketplace local pickup, so no fees. So, winning!

I still maintain a spreadsheet. The expenditures are usually just " (date) estate sale (location)" and then each next line is the specific item and sold. I started this out to prove to my wife that my hobby PAID for itself (unlike my coin collection, firearm collection, reloading equipment, or car parts) but once she saw the $$ I got the green lite to float up to $1k so I can make the household some extra money for family trips, etc.

It helps that I'm a financial analyst in my day job....

Myself and Mrs Duddly have been living with my mother for the last few months to help her with some health issues and my picking has been waaaay down. Yes, you heard that right! I am living the dream! 63 years old and living in my mother's basement!

In the meantime, I have loved following everyone's adventures. Almost makes up for the downtime.

Truthfully it has been a privilege to give back and I hope to get even Grandma Duddly out to the Civitan flea market this weekend. I have snuck out a few times and picked up a smattering of Starret, North Brothers/Stanley, Chapman, etc. but I thought some here might get a kick out of this estate sale find. For $250 I picked up a working stair lift so I can quit yelling at my mother to stay off the stairs! Oh what a fun time I had cutting the track to length and then switching sides. I think it will go down (see what I did there?) as one of my most memorable finds.

And with that I present... Grandma Duddly's stair lift:

Nice, things always seem to come in threes for some reason. Was this one you had, or one you just found/picked up?
Honestly don’t remember. I know I got it in one of my picks this year, can’t remember if I posted it or not. Sometimes I lose track. I don’t always post everything I get. I should, but I don’t.

Not to sound sore or anything, but when a $100 Snap on double stack doesn’t warrant some cred, I just shut down. Happens every year for a good pick and I go dark, get over it, and come back.

No big deal. Thats not why we do it. Just thought I’d post it because you mentioned the tool.

Agreed. The one when I mentioned it had a couple of things that were amazing "for me" at the price I paid (like the camera lens @ 10% of market value) but the Proto LA set got the "*****", even though I will probably sell them. Just seems to come and go...I also end up posting off and on for the same reasons.

You absolutely **** Cruzan80 for the LA Proto set you scrounged for. I could imagine myself doing the same thing as you described it. Great score.

You two better be careful before someone calls you out for solicitation!!!

Yes, I'm kidding. I'm sure others aren't. I don't get bent out of shape over it, it's all just entertainment for me.

I do like the freebies, though.

That's not solicitation. It's just pouting. ;) We've all been there, but not everyone gets all goosebumpy over all the things we as individuals do. Many times it's just timing. The guy who posts just before or after you scores something that steals your thunder. Sometimes it's as simple as posting just before the thread flips to a new page and half the members don't bother to go back and see what they missed. If you think you have a fantastic find that everyone overlooked, post it again after you clean it up and share your enthusiasm.
