Bob, I haven't been to you thread in awhile. I've missed a lot especially about the prescriptions, etc.

But what has caught my attention in catching up is the story about your great grandmother. It's an illustration that we tend to think of 1864 as an eon ago. SO far removed from us today. But she was a woman that you; a living breathing man here in 2023, knew as a boy and you're still alive to talk about her. Time in some ways seems too far to span but in other ways is really not all that long ago.

My ex wife's grandmother (Marion, I knew her well) died in the early 1990's but she was 96 years old. She probably would have lived a lot longer but she fell and broke her shoulder. We all know what tends to happen then. Her younger sister lived to 107.

She used to relate that she remembered well when the Rural Electrification Program came through her home town Des Moines, IA and when she was terribly excited because, "Mr. so & so (the mayor) was going to get an AUTOMOBILE!". She had a teacher that had stood in line all day to see Mr. Lincoln's funeral train. Her mother was the valedictorian of her high school class but the school wouldn't award it to a female. They made her accept the salutatorian award instead! She was accepted into medical school but the janitor, "a colored man" - as she called him - wouldn't let her walk into the front of the school on her first day. She had to go around back. She was maybe the first woman M.D. in Iowa. Got paid in chicken or eggs. A butchered hog if a major injury. These things being told to me when I was in my 20's so my "connection" was by word of mouth to things seemingly only seen/told about in history books. I find these stories fascinating. Thanks for the story.

PS: One night I went down a rabbit hole looking at pictures of Lincoln's funeral and found a shot of Lincoln's funeral procession going through New York City, passing the Roosevelt mansion and it has been determined Teddy Roosevelt as a child and his brother are caught in the photo looking out a window at the goings on! Again, the connections in history are fascinating!

Dan, I really do feel blessed to be this old. Liane's grandmother knew her great grandmother who was born in 1775 and died the year my great grandmother was born. Liane's family settled in the Bronx in 1657 and my family settled in Westchester county 45 years later in 1702. Our family farms were 10 miles apart back then.

Hurricane season officially starts June 1 so it's time to trim the trees. I trim branches I can reach from the ground. The pole saw is 14 feet long so I can reach branches about 20 feet up. The two oak trees are taller than that so it was time to climb a ladder or call Ixes, our go-to tree guy. Climbing the ladder is no problem but not holding on while running a chainsaw seems risky.

Ixes brought the tops down 10 feet and trimmed off all the little inner branches. I asked if I should remove the fabric from the wedding chapel but he said no because he would be tying off the branches near it before cutting and lowering them to the ground. It looks naked but stuff grows fast down here.

While he was here he lifted the tamarind tree by cutting the low inner branches so you can throw a cat through it. Pruning a tree so you can throw a cat through is the metric for fruit tree pruning but also applicable to trees that will likely survive a category 3 hurricane.

When Ixes and his helper were finished, we had a neat pile of 4-foot pieces covering most of the swale in front of the house. It will be gone by sunset on Monday. Seems like a decent deal for $550. Only the trees lost limbs in the process.

More trivia: one chapter is about giant eucalpytus trees in Tasmania. And topo maps of redwood country in CA aren't a very reliable way to estimate which tree is tallest, because the maps aren't very accurate because they were based on radar, and there's just too much forest for that radar to work well. Travel on foot is very difficult, given the height of the fallen tree trunks.

That author's name stood out to me right off the bat, but I had to think about it a bit to remember why. I've read a few Richard Preston books back in the day that were downright terrifying! The Hot Zone and Demon in the Freezer are both nonfiction books about ebola and smallpox, respectively. The Cobra Event is fiction, but equally terrifying, about the danger of bioweapons. I highly recommend any of them.

I will now be using this to describe how much a tree has been trimmed...thank you Bob! :ROFLMAO:

Tom, after reading the outline and first few pages, I bought a Kindle version of The Wild Trees. If it turns into another Ian Fleming (James Bond), Stephen Hunter (Bob Lee Swagger & family) or Jim Grant [Lee Child] Jack Reacher series I'll probably regret starting down the rabbit hole.

@Squankum, are you calling tree huggers nerds?

Marc, I first heard the saying here in Florida. Never heard it when I lived in apple country (Hudson Valley, NY).
Yes. I read it actually listened to the audiobook narrated by the author. Excellent book.
Andrew, I was tempted to sign up for Audiobooks but another $14.95 sucked out of my wallet every month, whether I listen to them or not, wasn't real appealing. Instead I bought a Kindle copy that I can read at my leisure.
What do you think is sipping the coolant, the water pump?
Kirk, that's what I suspect. Probably seeping past the water pump seal or gasket -- just enough to smell but not enough to mark the driveway. I have to take the timing belt cover off to see the water pump so I'll just replace the belt, tensioner and pump at the same time. The car has about 50,000 miles on it so I don't think it has reached the crisis stage. Just have to pay closer attention to the fluid levels. On the other hand, I don't wait for things to go south.

I checked the pads on the PT Cruiser's brakes and they had plenty of mterial left. While I was there I checked the rotors and they were past their minimum thickness. Ordered the rotors but they were the wrong ones -- meant for a Turbo GT. Didn't know they were thicker and required different calipers and brackets. In for a penny and in for a pound. The Turbo rotors and pads were $14 more than the N/A rotors and pads and the Calipers were $176. For $200 I upgraded the brakes. The carbon fiber ceramic pads don't produce any of that nasty black dust the stock pads produced. Wheels don't look like they came out of a coal mine anymore.

Yesterday our fourth great grandchild joined our family. Parents might be hinting with the name -- Liane Roberta! She joins the other 3,471 girls named Liane in the US Social Security Administration's database.
Awesome Bob! Congratulations to you and Liane.
Looks like your going to have to start building toys with that 3D printer.

Congratulations on the newest member of the family Bob.

I can honestly say, I am enjoying the hell out of being a grandpa, and it's only been 7 weeks now. They grow so freakin' fast.

I use apps called Hoopla and Libby. They are linked directly to my library and don't cost me a penny.

Congrats!
Congratulations Bob 🥳 I enjoy our Grandson but a Great Grandson would be even more exponentially greater. Enjoy but take rest breaks when required. Our little guy can run us ragged.

Very cool news, Bob. Congrats.
Congrats Bob, that's a nice tribute with the name!
Congratulations on your great-grandson, Bob & Liane. Our oldest grandson is 21 so we don't expect any great-grandchildren yet.
Congrats Great Grandpa!

Bret
Bob,
Congrats Great GrandPa!
Congratulations to you and your family!!
Great news Bob. Heartiest congratulations from down under.
Bob, congrats on the newest addition!
WOW, Logan, @Miss the Pontiacs, Uncle Lenny, Cody, Mike, Kirk, Marc, Philip, Bret, Jon, Dennis, Geoff and @bugnut, this overwhelming outpouring humbles me. I sometimes forget how blessed I am.

Andrew, this is embarrassing, first because I use my smart *** phone so rarely and second because my library card has expired. Shouldn't be surprised since it's hieroglyphics on papyrus. Our new downtown library is three blocks away so I'll see about getting a new one today. I also need to make an appointment with the dentist to get my wooden teeth fixed. I suspect I have termites.
Congrats, Bob!

Thank you @zanyad. In the past I've purchased audio books on CD. We have the Oz, Outlander and Game ofThrones series and a few other shorter books. The CDs are in a 400-CD changer in the garage that plays through speakers as well as the intercom system. Sadly or gladly, we forget the stories so re-playing them is like a new experience. Movies tend to be the same way but by the end we realize we've seen it before. Takes a couple of years to forget. We have very clear memories of decades old movies but recent ones are a bit fuzzy.

We're officially old and targets of one of the Grandparent scams. Didn't work but thought I'd share because it's a good one.

Received a call this morning from a PRIVATE CALLER with no number. I ignored it but Liane picked up. It was a young woman with a somewhat familiar voice/accent. The woman didn't do the "Hi Grandma and Grandpa, it's me, [insert name of granddaughter]. She made us guess and said yes to our second try. It's our most responsible, best educated and reliable one. She's calling from jail because she was on her phone trying to arrange a COVID test when she crashed into another car. The other car was carrying a pregnant woman who is in intensive care and may lose her baby. She begs us not to call her parents and asks us to wait on the line for the call to be transferred to her "friend's" father, who is an attorney. He's going to represent his daughter, our granddaughter and the third occupant 'pro-bono' but he won't post our grand-daughter's bail. Tells us the bond is $12,700 and must be paid in cash. Tells us the name of the judge, who will be calling to verify our information. Advises us to lie to the bank teller when I withdraw the money because it will be reported to the IRS, the FBI, the Space Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firecrackers. OK, he didn't specify the PO-PO that would grill me but did suggest I tell them I was buying a boat for cash.

Alarm bells were going off from the start. The lawyer mis-pronounced our name "Hiney" and made us give him our granddaugher's address to verify we knew her(????). While Liane was emptying her purse and checking couches and chairs for money, I googled Michael Collins, the "lawyer" and the number he told me to call back on. No lawyer match, no phone match and checking the county court and jail records, no person with our granddaughter's name is found. Smelled a rat with the caller ID because I'm no expert but thought jail calls always showed in caller ID and the jail asks you to accept the charges for the call. Also never heard of a jail call being switched to another person. Lastly, this granddaughter got married back in October and wouldn't have used her maiden name (she's the responsible one). Called the police (not on 9-1-1) and verified this was a scam. Callously violated the "judge's" do or die gag order and called our daughter-in-law to find out what's going on. She and her daughter were talking on the phone this morning -- our granddaughter had decided to stay home from work.

The "lawyer" called back this afternoon (he gave us 2 hours to get the money -- so the judge wouldn't be upset -- and release our granddaughter). Caller ID indicated the call was coming from Toronto ON. He's called back twice and didn't leave a message but we heard a woman sigh on the first recording. I was going to answer, partially cover the microphone and say "Officer, this is the Michael Collins call I told you about."

Back when I was gainfully unemployed, I would occasionally spend time on the phone with the scammers. I would agree to most if not all the demands, sorry, requests. Naturally I didn't, and had no intention of following up. I would usually end the 3rd or 4th call by mentioning that I had the police, FTC or some other government agency listening to the conversation, or tracing the call. It generated some wonderful results. Usually with lots of foul language and comments about my (unmarried) parents.
Now that I'm gainfully retired I don't have the patience. 🤷

A.) Congrats on anaother great grandchild. I hope I get to experience even one!

B.) This thread very recently took a turn for the even-more-awesome. I'm loving these scammer stories. And here I thought the subject lines in my spam emails were funny!

Question Bob. Did you get a number of notices that your Netflix Account has been put on hold prior to the Grandparent Scam? Just curious. I have been through the New Car Warranty thing and recently graduated to the Netflix thing and wondering if there is anything in between???

If a family member called from jail, I do hate to be the one to break it to them that they are staying in Jail if they were counting on me. 🤣😂

If it’s ok for my uncles, it’s fine for anyone else.

They do the same thing for kidnapping and the IRS. I had to take the phone away from my mother in law and hang up on the "IRS". Normally she wouldn't have fallen for it but they called her as we were getting ready for a funeral.

I was just reading about phone scams yesterday. Some that claim to be supporting your local police/firefighters/whatever, yeah, they mostly just keep the money for themselves, and now for a new technological twist: they can be English speakers from overseas but are using a "soundboard" of prerecorded words and sentences without any kind of foreign accent as the victims hear it.

If my phone rings, and I don't recognize the number, it goes to the machine, which they hang up on. If I do pick up, and they ask for things, I hang up. It works well, as I enjoy being rude to grifters.

Received a text message this morning that my vehicle was going to be repossessed if I did not contact Best Buy Auto Sales in Moses Lake Washington to make a $243 payment immediately. I texted back telling them them to come get it.

(I haven't had a car loan in over 20 years)
The car warranty calls made me laugh because nobody is going to write a warranty insurance policy for cars several decades old!
