My Firestone breaker bars!!

So far I have a 1/2 pebble grain and a 1/4 firestone breaker bar and now I need a 3/8.

They were made by Plomb and I'm no expert

I have to say I haven't seen any off the Plomb stuff out my way. I travel to all the car swaps and flea markets for miles around. Just on Ebay.

Years ago Firestone had stores that sold lots of Firestone branded stuff, lawnmowers, bikes, tools etc. Like the old Western Auto stores did.

Firestone, like Western Auto, used to sell their own line of tools badged with their name, or in WA case the name Wizard. Firestone stores of the sixties sold some appliances, bicycles, really cool colored tires, ond the coolest cheater slick of anyone for a 20" bike, and tools that by then were made by New Brittian if memory is correct. WA, actually was very much the same, with tons of bicycle accessories as well.

I never heard of Firestone branded tools until I started on this message board. I did not believe Firestone branded tools had anything to do with the tire company. But when you compare the logos, they are the same.

I bought this one at the flea market today, from a guy who bought the tools from a machinest that had died. The seller did have a bunch of old Proto and Plumb, but also other brands.

I have wanted a Firestone for a while, so of course I set it aside while I was sorthing through the other stuff. Then I found a clone with a round knurled handle in the pile. Whoever made the clone made the Firestone, and simply had a different handle. They do not look like Plomb to me, but I have just started with Plomb.

Someone needs to ID the clone, and that is who made the Firestone ratchet. Only marks on the clone is R-10 and made in USA. Only marks on the Firestone is Firestone on the handle.

for what its worth i used to work at freestone. we had company provided torque wrenches. they were obviously made by snapon but they had firestone written all over them. perhaps these firestone tools were provided by the company to its mechanics?

I think Plomb made some of the Firestone ratchets. I have one and it's quite smooth.

I think your hint of the ratchets for sale figured most of the mystery.

The Firestone ratchets did not look like Plomb/Proto to me. But I am new to those those brands.

First pic is from the for sale section on this message board, with the 3 middle being Fleet, Penens, and Challenger. Model 1661 for all 3 ratchets for sale. All those brands are part of the Plumb/Proto empire.

Second pic is from AA of a Penens 1661.

Third pic is my Firestone and the clone I bought today. I put a ruller in the pic so I would look like AA.

Based upon the above, I do not think Plomb or Proto made the Firestone ratchets, but it was one of their subsidiaries. Per AA the Plomb owned company Penens producted tools for the Fleet and Challenger brands. My assumption therefore is that Penens made the Firestone ratchet.

When I get a chance I will take the Firestone and it's clone apart.

Here they are apart. Identical except for the handle. Both are chrome plated. I was hoping to see some stampings on the inside plates, but there was nothing.

Each ratchet had a screw and hole in the plate where the threads were a bit screwed up, so I cleaned it up with a tap and die.

The inside design looks like a Plomb/Proto. Per AA Plomb purchased Penens in 1942, and I think Penens Corporation made the Firestone ratchets. The pebble finish around Firestone is like my Plomb/Proto pebbles.

My assumption is the same, the "teardrop" styled head with the Plomb/Proto design ratchet mechanism was produced by Penens, and sold under various brand names.

Have yet to see a "teardrop" example with the Proto or Plomb logo. They either have oval or figure eight style cover plates.

Interestingly enough, there is a Proto oval head ratchet with a Firestone style handle in the collection.

Yeah. I seen that. However when I did an internet search this is about the only info that comes up. I'm hoping that the people who have kept tool for 70 years have kept there same email addresses also and will get and respond to my messages.

I literally am not an antique tool collector but come across stuff from time to time. My step dad however would buy any tools he could at auctions for the right price. So when I found this Firestone tool it caught my attention because I never knew they produced or sold tools.

I literally only have 1 thing that I found in an old tub of **** that was given to me. The only reason I am here is because I never knew Firestone made tools. Then when I started searching I realized that the 3/8 breaker bar is alot more rare than the 1/4 or 1/2 inch models. I also believe it might be a pebble handle but I'm not 100% sure. As I can't find an example that clear states what a pebble handle is. And I definitely have no clue the value. If you collect antique tools or are intrested. Just let me know.

Obviously I was joking about funding retirement.
If you look at a close up of the breaker bar handle, you’ll see a pebbly textured background behind the lettering. That’s why it’s called “pebble”.

Yeah I knew you were joking. Sorry if I didn't convey that in my reply. So if that's the pebble. Then is there a reference or name for the one in my previous attachment.
