I would not mount a fan on any kind of plastic box. Metal box or the fan isn't being hung. I just replaced a plastic box that was fan because of the the fan mounting brackets on the box broke.

There is only 1 type of plastic box that is suitable for hanging a fan & the fan mounting bracket is fastened to the framing with it. The OP's is not a fan rated box.

I've seen a few styles that use plastic boxes, but the fan is NEVER supported with screws hanging directly from the plastic. Usually there's a metal strap hidden on top of the box that connects the machine screws the fan hangs from to either the framing or the expanding arm.

This is the only type of fan rated bar hanger I am aware of.


There are a few plastic fan rated boxes, but none of them have a bar hanger. They attach directly to framing

If it not marked as such it is not a fan rated box. About as simple as it gets, unless the markings are hidden by copious amounts of drywall mud & texture by the mud daubers.
