Shower valve issue/question

My daughter just bought a house, was built in 1992. The previous owners did some mods before listing it. Replaced hardware, including shower valve handles. Single lever, pull to turn on and turn to adjust blend of hot and cold.

Issue is that when turning handle to adjust balance of hot and cold, there is no stop.

This doesn't seem right, and I'm thinking the sellers replaced the handles with something incompatible with the actual shower valve.

Before I go out there and start digging around I thought I'd post here and see what you guys think.

Any ideas?

I think you are on the right track. I don't see any brand name visible, like Delta or Moen, so I'm guessing they bought a universal replacement trim kit and didn't install it correctly. Faucet handle appears to be standing out away from escutcheon plate too far too. If you remove all that and you can see the actual faucet brand in the wall, you may be able to figure out what's missing.

Sounds like it's missing the stop under the handle , pull allen screw and handle so you can see what's missing. Post a picture looking at center of valve.

I would have a Professional Plumber install a Moen Positemp valve with a “Smltty” plate to close the hole in the wall.

From your description of the valve , it sounds like a Moen . Center picture without handle would help, also Moen would been over backwards to try to help you. Just a fyi.

Have you measured the temp at full hot? No matter what you do with my shower valve, it won't scald. That's been a code for a long time now. It's an internal part and non adjustable. Actually, IDT you can buy a valve that will scald you. Anywhere.

If you have to pull the handle out and then rotate it for temp control it's not a Moen Posi-temp, it could be a Moen Chateau. Moen Posi-temps you only rotate the handle and it starts at cold and moves to warm as it's rotated. Either one uses a metal stop tube with a square area at the top of the tube to limit rotation and it covers the hair pin that secures the cartridge, the Posi-temp has a 2 piece plastic gear to limit temp added to it. The older Moen Chateau's use a 1225 style cartridge, Posi-temp uses a 1222 style cartridge

Just about any manufactures valve can be set/modified to provide water over 120 deg. F easily if the water heater can supply water at that temp, Code only states that the water supplied from the valve can not exceed a certain temp, it doesn't mean the valve is not capable of doing it. I've installed/adjusted thousands of Moen, Delta, PP, Kohler, etc. over 45 years as a Local 130 Plumber.
