I feel that old threads should not be able to be added on to after three months. What do you think of asking for this change?

I think 1yr with no activity should result in the thread being locked. Note, locked doesnt mean deleted! All that content will be there if a person searches for that topic.

Big problem with having open, really old threads is that it gives spamers a way to get into the forum. Thats a bit of a concern.

A flag that pops up might be an idea, but I dont think it would stop folks from posting in ancient threads and it definitely wouldnt stop the spammers/bots. Its either a lock or nothing.

Spammers post on any thread , not just the old ones . albeit they tend to gravitate to the older threads for some reason.
Yes they do. But I suspect the reason the old ones are targets is that it takes time for the thread to get populated into the spammers database that the bots use to make these posts. The spam in new threads is likely done by humans. Most of the spam is by bots, so the old threads are the prime targets. At least thats my guess.

My guess is older threads typically show more views and posts.

Those who say "lock the old threads" may not have a great grasp with the info or knowledge and culture on TGJF. It's cool though, sip your White Claw while surfing the BMW and Taylor Swift forums where they lock old threads. lol

last reply to this Blackhawk thread that somebody just replied to was April '21! Funny the notification shows up right above the notification for this thread!

Hmm I still see no reason to lock threads.

One thing that would be nice is if somewhere there was a forum with a search function that actually functioned. That I’m sure would cut down on the number of new useless threads on topics that have already been beat to death. I personally like to recommend doing a google search of the site, by throwing this in the google search bar along with whatever you’re looking for;

site:www.garagejournal.com

or

site:forums.tdiclub.com

etc. etc.

Worlds better than any forum search. I use that technique for all the forums I frequent.

Years ago I found this place shopping for mid-lifts. I'm sure I looked at threads that had been added to over a few years, all that info I probably saw in those threads is what made me look deeper into TGJF and become a member. Look at my join date and post count...That's probably because of some nuisance old threads that weren't closed after a month.

Not looking at the dates before you reply is a you problem and not a we problem. lol
