every time I see a new addition to this I get a little (well may be a lot) more jealous - love the sign, really cool

Awesome space and some super cool projects you got going on!

I liked the idea of placing the sign close to the civic but your final position is solid - love the view when walking into the garage from the "office" area. Look forward to more updates!

THanks a lot, sir!
Yeah i thought the same. At the Civic area i would hit my head at the sign constantly. it would cover the decoration behind it and it would be difficult to move there with some bigger parts in your hands. so it makes much more sense where it is now.

Good news. Time for a little update:
One thing that always annoyed me a bit was the garage entrance, which is shared with our lovely in-laws, but on their part of the property.
So it's basically theirs by law, but we are allowed to use it. Means in theory we have nothing to say about how it looks etc, except it must be accessible for us.
Now my in-laws are nice guys and let us give our input all the time, but as it is, elderly people sometimes have strange ideas, save money in the wrong places, and definitely take their time to make desicions. etc.
We have been discussing several ideas since we finished the house maybe 4 years ago, to finally put some kind of bricks, a concrete layer or tarmac road surface in there.
Because as you can already see in the photo. the current mix of sand and gravel is rock solid when dry, but a bit muddy after heavy rain and especially difficult to keep clean, as you will bring in all kind of dirt and debris into the garage all time, which means a dusty environment and a lots of cleaning...
20230924_143514-Kopie.jpg

We never really made progress and the problem wasn't that big to motivate my in-laws to speed up things, for me it was fine.
Well, these days our neighbours are building a house and my father-in-law decided he might be able to save some Swiss franks if he asks them to bring the gear over directly and get some stuff done.
So today a small excavater removed the top gravel layer. an old drain pipe got re-installed (another long-term project of my in-laws...)
And a concrete mould is in preparation just now.
20230925_153612-Kopie.jpg

And this is how it looked this evening. there is a slight tilt so the water would flow to the outside in case of rain. the rebar was laid down so the concrete won't crack when there is a heavy load. Generally concrete is much mor stable then tar, which tends to deform, especially when the load is applied on the same area all the time (like say... a garage entrance). so concrete is the best choice.
I'm happy to make some progress. this will also make it a lot easier to load / unload stuff from a trailer or delivery truck straight into the garage with a Pallet trolley etc.
20230925_173651-Kopie.jpg

Super happy with the progress and i guess there is more to see in the coming days...

one of my favourite threads, any reason why the block paving wasn't carried across though?
In the original house building plan, "open" blocks (where grass can grow through and rainwater can easily drain) were planned. but that's also not the best option against dirt in the garage.
The blocks you see in the picture from the much older neighbouring garages have moved a lot over the years and are very uneven (not well visible in the photos). Especially where the tire tracks are.. So concrete is most probably the most solid option.

And then the guys who were asked to do it are concrete workers working on the house next door so they didn't have to bring any additional people or machinary and could just do it with some "leftover" rebar and while they had to wait for the neighbours house concrete to dry, so i guess it was the cheapest and fastest opportunity while beeing the most solid one, so i'm pretty happy with that.

So yesterday they finished the rebar and preparation work:
20230926_083152-Kopie.jpg

Then Concrete was poured:
20230926_115835-Kopie.jpg

After a quick pre-dry, the surface was smoothened with a rotating smoother (see picture below) to make the surface even, and because the neighbours dog decided to walk through the freshly poured concrete :ROFLMAO:
20230926_154239-Kopie.jpg

Today morning it looks like this: so basically it's now an extension of our garage floor, which will make it super smooth to roll in and out whatever you want, including pallette trolleys, the 240Z chassis on the rolling jig, etc.. way mor comfortable than any bricks or so. You can see the sorface is a bit "rougher" than the garage door. this was made by choice, so there still is a good traction in case of snow, heavy rain, etc.. the transition from the garage inside and the entrance will be sanded down once the concrete has dried up 100%. we have to wait now until friday until we can drive over it with a car... looking forward to the first super-smooth garage roll-on after 4 years :D
20230927_081756-Kopie.jpg

Oh and here's a recent photo (hedge is growing) from the house in a beautiful sunset, viewed from our neighbours top floor. I like how nobody expects a big (for our standards here) garage and workshop underneath it at all :)
After 4 years in this house there is'nt much i/we would change it's still in perfect shape and will hopefully last many decades.
It's kind of fun how you get used to things and then i always get surprized when visitors are overwhelmed by the smart home technology and the house and the garage. Then it reminds me how fortunate we are to have been able to build something like this.

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
Really really awesome build! Nicely planned and executed. Contemplating doing something similar into our hillside, but we not only have (like you) the overly cautious EU planning nightmare, our Comune (Assisi) is a designated historical zone (even though we're 18km from Assisi...) - good from the standpoint no one is going to buy up the olive orchard across from us and put up condos, bad because everything here has to pass their design review board.

Anyway, we have issues of rain or snow melting and then freezing... I would do concrete, but paving stones are less susceptable to becoming a slippery sheet of ice in the winter.

Good luck with that. Luckily were' just one road away from the "historical zone" so we just had to follow the standard law (which you can read was already quite a messy procedure).
Anyway. i think the solutino is fine. biggest part of it is covered by the garage entrance roof, and the case were melting snow will freeze is very rare here, i wouldn't want to drive on the roads then anyway, because then you have the same situation there.
At the end it was my in-laws desicion and i'm very happy we have anything solid now :)

So. since friday we can use the concrete entrance and it makes quite a difference in terms of roll-in quality. It's obviously much smoother now :)
Since today also the concrete molds got removed and the thin styro insulation sheets between the walls and the fresh poured concrete (there to allow the concrete to expand because of temperature changes): got cut down:
20231002_143757-Kopie.jpg

Also the surrounding areas got filled with soil again, at least roughly. so it is more or les flat. On the brick-side it is only temporary, so the bricks will be completed again i a few weeks, i guess. Knowing my lovely in-laws, such projects can take years to complete *lol*
Nevertheless, i'm happy with the result, and will post an update when the surrounding is more-or-less completed:

Amazing thread, build & garage! Just finished reading the whole thing....best thread ever for sure.
One question....how did the cat door turn out? Is it getting used?

Holzschlag!
Holzschlag = "felling of wood". My father in law had a foresting company a while ago and still uses the signs to block constructino sites :)

Thank you sir. appreciate your feedback and happy you liked it :)
The cat flap is used dozens of times daily. Obviously the cat prefers us "servants" to open the regular door for her, but when nobody is around or when the huumans are too lazy to get up from the sofa and open her the door, she happily goes in and out via the flap.
The only downside is you can't avoid her bringing in her "catch of the day" anymore :)

Yup, I thought it was funny in that location. Obviously the most handy sign at the moment.

I also suspected you might pick up on my alias hinting that I speak German. 😎

Time for another update:
My father in Law finished the garage entrance surprisingly fast, especially since he cut all the stones manually:
20231105_160237-Kopie.jpg

The result is excellent, if you ask my untrained eye:
20231106_151132-Kopie.jpg

I probably would have done it slightly different, but i'm absolutely fine with it:
20231106_151139-Kopie.jpg

20231106_151151-Kopie.jpg

What else? I scored something which i was looking for for almost 10 years: An original Datsun Special tool wall. This one was untouched since the late 70ties. And the purchase also included a set of original Datsun Germany Workshop jackets (Allthough children size), AND most of the original tools:
20231126_153317-Kopie.jpg

Naturally, i had to install it the following weekend:
20231203_125439-Kopie.jpg

Starts to look like a Datsun dealership from the early 70ties :)
20231203_125454-Kopie.jpg

20231203_125512-Kopie.jpg

You may have also noticed this big red Datsun poster on the right side wall? Well i got it from an elderly lovely lady who owned the bodyshop next to Datsun Switzerland HQ in the 80ies and worked closely with them. She gifted it to me after she found out how interested i was in the story. I will try to find a better place for the poster, but for now it will do there:
20230919_165508-Kopie.jpg

I also collected a few Random / Rare Datsun Steering wheels. I had a friend design and 3D print a set of special wall mounts so i could hang them all nicely in the workshop area:
20231026_193951-Kopie.jpg

And the Cars? Well the bodyshop is doing excellent work on the Z, but it's slower than expected due to a few illness-related missing people:
They still plan to have the body / Shell eady in spring 2024 so i can continue.
20231005_144353-Kopie.jpg

And of course i've collected plenty of NOS and used parts. this is only one of various deliveries i was able to purchase:
20231123_180301-Kopie.jpg

I've also done a major overhaul on the EK9, which included new brakes, a new radiator a lot of small things and a Complete Front end re-spray due to the many paint chips. (small stones on those swiss mountain passes don't help with that...). Also had the complete car polished and waxed profesionally. The photo really doesn't do the results justice. it looks fabulous!
20230513_083433-Kopie.jpg

There is a little winter project which i hav eplanned. and that's the restauration of the notoriously worn out OEM Recaros. I managed to find a spare seat and all original (obsolete) Recaro spare parts. Now only the center fabric is missing, which is now re-made by a company who somehow is related to the original Honda Interieur design team. awesome.
20230526_153821-Kopie.jpg

That's it for now. my Work is occupying me like crazy for the last and next few months and i don't have any big changes planned house / garage wise (except a new BBQ grill or small movable outdoor kitchen, if wifey approves). But let's see. i've learned that my plans never go as planned :p I'll keep you updated. of course.

Remember the guy who sold me an old Datsun tool wall and some datsun Clothes a while ago? He recently contacted me again to tell me he found an old Datsun Advertizing banner in his dad's former workshop. A part of it has been cut off and hi didn't manage to clean the dirt off. So he offered it to me for 10 bucks plus shipping. I have never seen such a large original Datsun Banner for sale. So i thought i better get it, even though it's not in the best shape. Today it arrived20240226_145657-Kopie.jpg

A gentle scrub with some industrial cleaner and grease remover brought quite good results.
20240226_145901-Kopie.jpg

After an hour of work it looke dmuch brigher and less dirty. You can't really see it in the photos, but t he difference is huge. But it still got that original patina, which i like too. 20240226_185836-Kopie.jpg

Now i only need to find a nice corner for it :)

Additionally i reorganized my cleaning area a bit and added a paper towel dispenser:
20240226_185906-Kopie.jpg

And i got hands on a Rim-display for 3 rims. I wasn't really looking for it, but hey - why not?
20240226_190222-Kopie-rotated.jpg

Oh and the Datsun is making great progress too: New floors, roofs, rocker panels and much more is in. Meanwhile the rear quarters have been replaced and now it's some fine-tuning and panel gap adjustment. then the rollbar goes in.
20240213_134351-Kopie.jpg

And after owning the car for 12 years or so, i only found out now that my Honda is actually a "TypeR-X" special edition.
No big deal and the differences are minimal comfort features, but still quite a positive surprize to me :)06-RX-Brochure-1.jpg-%E2%80%8E-Windows-Fotoanzeige.png

A while ago, i got this original Datsun Banner from Germany. It looks like it has been modified a few times over it's lifetime. The Logo is printed on some heavy duty Truck tarpaulin type of material. But it also was cut off. so i have no idea if it originally was a big Datsun Advertizing canvas, or maybe came from a truck or something else? Anyway. A few weeks ago i cleaned it, and it turned out really nice. However it still had this odd shape with the diagonally cutoff lettering on the left and the logo not in te middle of the rest. So after thinking about it for a while, today i decided it's time to make a nice Logo-only approx 4:3 shape banner out of it:
20240311_162416-Kopie.jpg

So first i cut off the excess part:
20240311_162539-Kopie.jpg

Then carefulyl measured the location of the other eyelets and punched some holes:
20240311_163132-Kopie.jpg

Before installing the new eyelet: on the new left side edge.
20240311_163220-Kopie.jpg

Turned out pretty well, if you ask me. I know there is an additional corner reinforcement on the right side, but i wasn't able to find any similar material, and it also doesn't look like it was originally there, so i thought i can easy leave it as it is. 20240311_163802-Kopie.jpg

Now i only have to find a nice place to hang it. Until then it will cover my messy solvent shelve :) Even though i cut it up, i think it's much more usable now and nicer to look at.

It does look better cut down, I have a Michelin sign that I cut out of a tire display cover/wrap - it works better as a small rectangle.

Time for another little update:
After 5 years in the house, i found out that the fan-cover for the guest restroom was also available in black. I thought that white cover always stood out like a sore thumb:
20240405_141614-Kopie.jpg

So i quickly had it replaced with the black one. Looks way "stealthier" and better:
20240405_162033-Kopie.jpg

Got gifted this original Nissan issued 280ZX metal plate sign from a lovely elderly lady.
20240405_185941-Kopie.jpg

And had to rearrange some of the other prints / decoration, so now have to find space on the walls for all this beautiful stuff:
20240418_192936-Kopie.jpg

Our company moved to the new fancy campus site recently, and that meant some more old stuff was leftover. I was able to score this nice little vintage swiss Gressel brand vice. Those are very common in production lines and workshop and are meant to last forever:
20240417_162216-Kopie.jpg

I also managed to get this lovely little older bearing press tool with integrated damper and restrictor: it's again an swiss Fehlmann brand "industrial grade" tool for workshops.
20240630_174753-Kopie-rotated.jpg

It was a bit dirty so i gave it a little cleanup. Read more about it here
20240630_182030-Kopie-rotated.jpg

There was also some progress on the car's side. The bodywork is more or less completed. and the car is back at my workshop.
20240502_192303-Kopie.jpg

At the end they replaced quite a few panels. these are some of them (but not all) which they replaced:
20240503_130117-Kopie.jpg

Now i'm pre-assemblying / mocking up everything to see how things fit, if any rework is required etc, before it goes back to the bodyshop for the final touches, panel gap alignment and if neccesary, some rework:
20240610_202900-Kopie.jpg

That's it for now. Thanks for enjoying and have a nice sunday.

Remember the rare Datsun original workshop tool wall i found a while ago? Ever since i got it, i thought one day i need to find the missing tools.
20231203_125439-Kopie.jpg

A few days ago i thought i'd give it a try and google for those items. It was surprisingly easy to find them, and today the package arrived with the three missing Kent+Moore tools:
20240724_163136-Kopie-rotated-e1721841491964.jpg

It seems like one of them (that round thing) is incomplete, but nevertheless. the wall is now fully equipped as intended for nissan dealerships. Note all the additional hooks that were placed there by the previous owner workshop.
Nevertheless. it's more or less complete now with all original Workshop tools and that makes me happy :)

It looks like it is just a slide handle. You could probably have one made to fit. Curious what the other hooks are for.
You're right, it's just a slide handle
s-l1600.jpg

The other tools are all kind of tools like oil filter remover belt, Vice-mount bracket / holder for the Differential, Various tols to open different cases, bearings, etc, Timing chain blocker, Clutch plate centering pin, Carb adjustment tools, Sliding hammer, etc.
This is a basic datsun workshop Tool board for general work on all Datsuns.

There were more specific tools for the 240Z and all kinds of Datsuns. There are several catalogues by Kent-moore and Datsun where each tool is described. I have two of them. One by Datsun / Nissan and one by Kent-Moore:
20231126_155900-Kopie.jpg

And i even found some original Nissan Switzerland catalogue with the different tool walls for workshop, which they offered in different variants. here's one example:

I guess the generations "conflict" is a global thing. Im sure they thought the same about their parents and our kids wiill think the same about us. It's just natural behaviour.

So. Time for another little update.
I took another attempt at sealing my sandblasting cabinet, as i used to have sand around it whenever i used it. Not sure this is better, but I'll see:
20241003_195134-Kopie.jpg

I also got myself a parts cleaner, which will be very useful for all the upcoming tasks:
20240926_180137-Kopie-rotated-e1730552284929.jpg

And a bit of decoration. An original 70ies "Datsun Saves" gas can from a promotion / advertizing campaign together with the 1978 advertizing from the ******* magazine:
20240827_151401-Kopie.jpg

Which i put in a nice frame and now has a special space in my workshop:
20240827_162410-Kopie.jpg

Now back to work on the cars.

We tried multiple options to try to minimize the blast media around our cabinets at work. I say minimize because they never fully stopped the media from collecting on the floor. And we always got media on the floor right under the access door. Just couldn't help that from not happening. I hope your improvements work for you.

sand blasting cabinets are great... but as far as I know, always messy.
we have a cabinet at work as well but always have media around that area.

there was a thread on garagejournal about using a vacuum cleaner and cyclone separator to create a vacuum inside the cabinet.
I am not sure how squeaky clean you can get using such a setup.
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/blast-cabinet-dust-vacuum.284979/

by the way, really love your thread and builds (y)

Just spent the past two days going though the house build and what an amazing place you have built. I am waiting to see the final result of the Datsun. Never owned one and had numerous chances in the 80's but was driving German cars. I did try to find one while I was living in Japan in the 90's but the dollar was very weak at the time and I could not afford their asking prices. They were few and far between and I really only wanted a 240 or a 260 and no 2+2's that the 280 were common.

I would love to know where you got the Recaro foam from, I have 4 sets of various condition Recaro LS series and set of SRD that need refinishing. I have a nice set of SRD's in my E30 M3 .

Just spent the past two days going though the house build and what an amazing place you have built. I am waiting to see the final result of the Datsun. Hi there. Thanks for your kind words, and nice to hear you took the time to go through all the posts
The recaro parts came from https://www.capitalseating.co.uk/ They're an official Recaro dealer for all kind of applications (from motorsports to tractors and airplane seats) and make their own products, based on origina. Recaro fabrics etc. From what i heard Recaro sports went bankrupt (again) recently. A quick check and it seems they have plenty of stuff for the E30 too:

So I recently managed to get this grinding machine for free from my father-in-law's old workshop.

It's an old-school heavy duty (literary) Swiss-made WASU (Walter Suter) industrial grinder.

The whole thing was fully functional, but quite dirty, hasn't been used in a long while and the stand was really oil soaked and dirty. The good thing, though, is that it came with a lot of accessories, like plenty of high-quality sanding belts, grinder disks, a wire wheel and a grinding disk grinder (to make the disk even again - that long handle thing).

First i removed the grinder from the table, and got rid of all bolts:

Then i started to sand down the dirty table planks:

And then coated them in classic linseed oil varnish (I just love the smell of it):

I think it turned out very well.

I also decided to give all metal parts (after I cleaned them, of course) a burnishing surface treatment with Brunox

And then assembled everything back together, after cleaning everything properly, etc. It doesn't look like new, but that was never my intention. Just now it looks like a proper machine-in-use vs the "abandoned" and dirty look it had before. Looking forward to using this gem again soon!
