I recently found this site and you guys really impress me with your knowledge and helpfulness. I am starting a workshop 40x42 and have dug out the topsoil (about 7") the builder is supplying 4" stone and 6" concrete. I want it raised up so I'm thinking of adding 8" of gravel 4" at a time soak it with a sprinkler and pack it with a backhoe (Cat 416C) by just driving on it with the bucket full. Is that going to pack it enough or do I need a roller or something else to pack it with? I'm in N.Y. state by the way.

You need to use a plate compactor every 2 inches or so of material. You'll be suprised how much it will compact. Compact the soil before you add the stone also. Some water will help to settle the dust but doesn't do much for compacting stone. I know someone will bring it up so think about adding a layer of plastic(vapor barrier) before the pour.

I used a roller i suppose it depends on your soil but the better you pack it the less likleyhood of your concrete cracking cheap insurance? Don`t forget the vapor barrier

Put down 2in of the extruded poly for insulation and pex tubing. I am happy that I got talked me into it. I did not heat the garage that way for two years but once I made the switch to radiant I wish I had done it sooner.
