The spindle felt like it had zero slop, it also turned freely (or freely enough with belt tension). The return spring is a bit weak but that ain't no thing really. Obviously missing part of one of the arms..
It's definitely heavy-duty, I'm not sure what went in that hole above the label. And I'm not a fan of the platform being clamped on, but for $40 I'm not sure I can pass it up.

I have that same drill press. As Jianciani says, that is in pretty rough shape. Missing the stock table that moves up/down with a crank. And the homemade base looks way too small, I bet its really tippy.

Re: the hole above the nameplate. Some models had the ability to move the head up and down the column, and I think the crank part fit in that hole.

I'm making a WAG that drill press head was removed from a multi station gang drilling set up and made into a floor model. What it's worth is somewhat dependent on where you live. I live in a machine tool desert where everything is rare and overpriced. 40.00$ seems OK to me for a project.

Thanks guys. Yeah the column, base and platform are def home made. The guy says that moving it requires at least two burly guys and a dolly. Said the base is heavy AF. I’m in the camp that $40 is $40 and it ain’t nothing for a project.
I don’t like the clamp platform at all, but could care less that it’s not 100% Delta.
I have two treadmill incline motors with the toothed (teethed?) bars. Could possibly retrofit that to make a motorized up/down lift.

But yeah.. idk yet personally.

17" Delta. I'm a diehard Delta guy and I wouldn't bother with that. You'll be several hundred $$ into making that even close to right. Table and base are homade, and everything else is rusted to ****.
It actually wasn’t bad on the rust side. I mean yeah pipe column, base and table just need a scrubbing. Head needs a stripper bash for sure. As ugly as it is… it’s solid.

It would be a good drill press to put behind the shop under a lean-to for hogging out holes so you don't get oil/chips everywhere in the shop. I think I would feel ok about the deal, but if you could get it for $30 or less that would be nice :)

It is what it is. If you can use it as is, awesome!

But $40 is just the price to haul it home. The real cost will come from trying to change it.

If you need something to do though - maybe it's just what you're looking for. I've certainly spent more for less...

Yeah IDK to be honest. Im not so much in a tool desert but things around here are over-priced. $100 for the bench top 5-speed model like I fixed from the junkyard a while back... same Chinese, no-name models too!

So I bought it, talked him down another $10.

Saturday I brought it home and proceeded with the tear down. Forgot to take a bunch of before pics but suffice to say the big parts have been cleaned and painted and I'm just starting re-assembly.

FWIW Yes that base plate did look small in the initial pics but man is it heavy. Once the paint dries Ill get it on the bathroom scale but I'm estimating a solid #150.

So I do want to ask.. I am thinking that until I can source a proper table, going to find some square stock and attempt cutting teeth and use the head's vertical adjustment. All the required head parts are there, freed up and moving like they should.
The motor is a Dayton 5k977b rated for continuous duty, 1/4hp. Actually runs really really smoothly.

Thanks! Hmm, the pipe used as a column on mine is also 3.5", maybe the safety ring is supposed to be super tight. It wouldn't slip down without a wedge in the clamp crack.

Nice restoration! Looks awesome. Just measured mine and OD is 3 1/2"
I wonder.. would you be willing to measure one more thing for me? The width, height and TPI of one of the gear racks. I thought maybe I could try to estimate rack specs off the head gear but I imagine there's some geometry at play that I'm unaware of between circular and flat interfaces.

I'm in the camp that it was not worth the $30 unless you needed a major project to keep you busy. Besides the lack of a table lift, and the missing motor pulley, this DP also does not have the slow-speed front pulley. The speed range will be too fast for many metal applications unless a slow-speed---or variable speed---motor is installed. Look at your front pulley vs the slow-speed pulley on my DP600 (which I recently sold for $100 when I retired).

Here's a few pics of the bottom gear rack (mine does not have a top gear rack). Ignore the naysayers - I have spent $30 on much worse!

I’ll either vfd the motor on here or go the DC route. Undecided yet. I mean have you seen my first DP thread? That was a complete ************* and now it’s.. well it’s still **** but upgraded ****.
I can’t go dump $500 on an all original, all accessories having DP. I love this heavy *** thing.
