Anyone heard of an American scale co no 322 before? I’m trying to figure out how wide the jaws are on it. The seller said in the description it’s 600 pounds with the base (the bottom is 3inch plate steel) I checked the vintage vises website but they didn’t have it listed

Here's one I have not seen before. Rapid action horn vise with Parker style jaws. Cam lock swivel base. 5-1/4" jaws that opens to 8-1/2" and weights 90 lbs. Dynamic is solid. Anyone seen one before? Needs some work but works like it should.

certainly not the same, but I came across (and bought) a well-made miniature rapid action vise - jaw 1 1/16in (one and one sixteenth)- weight 9oz, maybe an exhibition, sales or patent model (cast (?), nickel plated, fully working) of a different but related vise -- action requires just lift off, then move and the usual tommy-bar and screw take over.

Here seen on a York swivel bullet 'toddler' (2 1/4 in) with Lincoln and Eliz II pennies.

rapidminivice2.jpg
here's the underside to show the somewhat similar tooth design.

I assumed this was an isolated try-out model which never went anywhere and that I'd never see another, but then saw it full-scale in a Manufrance catalogue of 1912.

rapidmanufrance1912.jpg
The catalog states that it's forged iron and available in 3 sizes - jaw 2 1/4in weighs 9lbs, jaw 3 1/4in weighs 17lbs, jaw 4in weighs 30pounds.

Manufrance were based in St Etienne. a major manufacturing center like Pittsburgh or Sheffield, but I think they were more of a distributor (big one, like Sears Roebuck) than maker.

The vise above it, in the catalog, with the dovetail ways is like the Swiss, German (also English) made (eg by Boley) watch/clockmakers type widely available in Europe at the time (and usually v well made)

There's an R on the dynamic jaw in the middle photo. I knew they were usually labeled as 203 R but I figured the R on the dynamic worked too. Perhaps not.

Good luck on your hunt.
R series Reeds have a number of upgrades over the old "plain" models and use different castings. That one is pre-R.

That 2C is pretty nice. I like how they float the pins so the pipe jaws center them self’s when clamped On a pipe.
Great point. The pins are stationary in the pipe jaws, but the four holes on the vise are slightly oversized which allows the pipe jaws a little play/ tilt to self center.

IMHO, the Reed C series combination vises are at the top of the ladder in design and execution. Right up there with Starrett Athol and not many others.

Yours is an excellent, museum quality example of a fantastic vise. 🍻

Anyone else have one of these sub mini Wilton Powerarm's? Stumbled accross it in the shop, have had it for a long time, can't remember where I got it. A Google search didn't turn up anything. Bummer that part of the label is missing, shown with a 1/4" drive 10mm socket for scale.20230706_142728_resized.jpg20230706_142801_resized.jpg

454: Here are 2 cuts from a 1961 (?) edit: 1966 catalog showing available PowRarm sizes. It looks like you have a #345 Midget.
In case anyone might want to build one of their own, I included the 1944 PowRarm patent drawings

Hi, newbie here. I've been doing some research on a vise that I recently bought locally and I came across this forum. It's full of so much info, but I haven't found anything yet on this one. Maybe some of you experts can give some insight? I bought this as a Wilton Cadet from pics from the seller. I have 4 bullets and wanted to add a Cadet to the lineup. This one, however, has no badges on it. There are some numbers cast into the dynamic jaw and the static as well. It's an 8135 as best I can tell. There is also a number on the bottom of the swivel. The slide is labeled GUAR EXP 12-31-55. I've also checked the horseshoe washer for any markings. none. You can see some, what I figure is original, orange paint in a couple of the pics. It has a bad, thick paintjob on it now, but I can tell the markings on the side haven't been ground off or anything. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Is it a find or a turd???

kkrbell:
Welcome to GJ and congrats on finding such a rare Bullet.

kudos to KMScott for recognizing and remembering that post verifying it as a one year only inaugural model Cadet.

For a color match to the original orange, I have heard that Chevy orange engine enamel is a good match.

CRS, thank you for the Pow-R-Arm scans. Not much info, or pics for the midget. Later ones seem to be quite different.

KMScott Thank you very much for the link and info! yes, very impressive to remember and pull that post for me!
And thanks Shiftless for the color match! I will likely be doing a partial resto on it though i still plan on using it.

Picked up a couple of Clamp-on's yesterday; PEXTO and an unknown maker with "3" cast in (not 3" (2-3/4" more like?)
The blue vise had no maker or COO, But I suspect EU origin (No chrome anywhere, even though the paint leans me to Japan.)
