Is there no AHJ for your area (no permits required)? If there is, the site prep should match the signed off plans.

From the photo alone, the thickened edge does not look as deep as I would expect to match code/FPSF-requirements for Wisconsin, but maybe it is an optical illusion. From my perspective of the photo, it wouldn't meet code here in Missouri.

It's a heck of a lot easier to take the possibility of frost heave out of the equation now rather than deal with the consequences of it after erecting the building, but it is ultimately your build.

I realize the advantage of the tubes but....how about digging a hole carefully just as if you were going to insert a tube but don't insert a tube. Yeah, some of your digging will fall in so you have to be careful do pull out any loose soil that falls. But w/o the tubes your slab will simply form it's on piers and you can have a perfectly smooth surface. Just do some careful measuring so you can locate the piers after the pour. You can sit 4x4 or 6x6 posts on metal supports just above the and then build trim to extend dow to the slab to cover the steel supports of 1x6 or 1x8 pvc trim boards or buy these

I have also seen kits at HD or L specifically made to transform a 4x4 into a round post.

I'd use some sonotubes if it were mine. I did that with the posts for my front overhang.





I'd also make sure that walk way is atleast an inch below the floor level of the garage to keep water from intruded.

Just thought of something - You're not worried about not having an expansion joint between the pillars that go below the frost line and the floating slab?

I'm starting to think maybe I'll put my posts on the Sonotubes but put them an inch or so beyond the walkway just to simplify things.

I like the idea of just not using the tubes. Hmmm...
I planned on using the trim piece at the bottom (and top). They make them specifically for the post I'm using.

To be honest I never even heard that term. I'm in a very rural area of NW Wisconsin and all I had to do to get my permit was give some general dimensions and pay some money. The county and the township came out to make sure I wasn't too close to my well or septic or lot line. There's no required inspection or any other follow up.

Your local authority will have jurisdiction over buildings. They vary throughout the nation.
From where I am I can’t answer questions about any area other than my own.
Ask where you are getting your lumber and other supplies from; I don’t expect them to have the answers but they will have the local knowledge to help you find the answers for your area.

The cardboard tubes are still there, just cut off at surface level.

It makes it easier for frost heave if that's a real possibility to grip the top of the column - concrete post - and lift it.

Simpler - embed the posts - set on a footing below frost line - and wrap expansion strip around post. Would be best to get a post treated to UC4C.
