Repainting the tongue on my enclosed trailer. It's a mixture of clean, bare metal where I can get to it and still slightly rusty where I can't.

Has anyone added hardener to this primer?

The coupler and inside surfaces will be topcoated with gloss black equipment enamel. The outside and front crossmember of the trailer will be bedlined. Think I'll do it all with at least one coat of enamel rather than going straight to the primer with bedliner. Thoughts on that are welcome as well.

Do you want to use hardener in order to speed drying time? I’d think you use primer as it comes then use hardener with the gloss top coat. Rust Oleum is great stuff and very affordable but once you‘ve become used to the speed at which catalyzed paints dry, waiting for it to be ready can require (too) much patience. In that vein, I might suggest an inexpensive epoxy primer, even if you’re applying it with a brush.

best, John

What does the label say about adding hardener? It’s been a bit since I’ve used that it read the label. Topcoat times aren’t too bad IIRC?

It's fine but I don't think you'll see a lot of benefit. The hardener I'm aware of that will work in Rust-Oleum products is Majic brand. In reality it works more akin to Japan drier than a true hardener.

Without going crazy on explanation and my pseudoscience I'll just say I don't think you'd see quite the same benefit in the primer as you do with the regular paint.

Wouldn't hurt though. So my advice is do you on that one.

I used the rusty metal primer on my Bilco door a few years ago.
Thought it would work better than regular primer even though I
sanded the door well and removed most of the rust.
I couldn't get the topcoat to lay well, lots of fish eyes no matter
how well I rolled it.
Apparently the primer base is made with fish oil, if you don't apply
it to rusty metal for the oil to soak in then top coat will not stick.

any reason you're using the rusty metal primer for bare metal and not the clean metal primer?

2018, I stripped and repainted a snow plow kit using the Majic brand implement paint and hardener from Rural King and it's held up very well.

Uhh...that second part is you not me;

Anyway, I use it all the time, just saying I don't think it would do much in the primer.

I have used hundreds of gallons of the red primer on structural steel. It dries fairly quickly and it is tough to remove. We would paint in the afternoon and install the next morning. If we had to do any welding it was a grinder or wire wheel to get it off. I can’t imagine what it would be like with hardener.

Yes you can add hardener and it works fantastic (as long as primer version is Acrylic) . Else that **** takes days to dry even in 110+ sunny weather.
I used this on amazon

How did you apply the hardened mixture?
I have the same paint to apply to the front of my sled trailer that gets shot peened all winter. Need something stouter.

Went ahead and primed it without hardener. Will be next weekend before I get back to it so it will have plenty of cure time.

The six rivnuts are to mount a plate that holds my generator. Wanted something in the holes before I installed the rivnuts so I bomb canned them with SEM self-etching primer.

The coupler and inside of the tubes will be equipment enamel gloss black. The outside of the tubes and front crossmember bedlined.

Does anyone have an opinion about going straight over primer with bedliner? I wonder if a coat of black underneath the bedliner would help it cover/adhere.

This part of the project's done other than I may put a hose on the engine oil drain.

Amazon generator cover. We'll see how it holds up. I can buy several of them for what my local upholstery shop wanted to make a nice one

A custom cover seems like it ought to be pretty easy for your cube.
I made round covers for 10 gallon Igloo water coolers and a cover for an eye wash station so the side would open up to access the washing tray. Owner was pleased.
