I'm looking for the best deal on 2" roloc sanding discs for use with die grinders.

I'd prefer an assortment of different grits. I'm also looking for the fiber disc type, not sand paper (see picture).

Where do you guys buy your consumables? What's the deal out there?

A shop I worked in used those way back in '84. The guys called 'em "cookies".

I don't allow Roloc discs in my shop. GM specifically warns against using them. I've seen them destroy bearings. It is totally impossible to clean out all the abrasive dust, and even if you could...it's still settling out of the air long after you're done using the things. Wild Guess: Ford and Chrysler also have warnings in their service manuals, too.

The airborne (Silicon Dioxide?) grit is not something you should be breathing, either. Wear a facemask or respirator.

For some reason 3m products seem to wind up on Amazon Warehouse deals frequently. Follow the Amazon warehouse deals thread in the Hot Deals section and keep your eye open. I bought a box of assorted and another box of 80 grit fiber discs from that thread and I haven't needed to re up in a long time

Otherwise, benchmark has sales all the time if you subscribe to their mailing list.

eBay is your friend. There are innumerable industrial liquidators/ surplus vendors on eBay. Very often when a facility is shut down or a major contracted job is completed, the surplus of consumables ends up on ebay and can be had for a fraction of 'list' prices. You just have to be patient, know exactly what you're looking for (model numbers/equivalents/etc), and be willing to buy in bulk.

Not everyone works in an auto shop on engines with these. They are great paint, rust and metal removers for many other projects/work.

Yeah, these are NOT being used for internal engine or transmission work. It's for brake hubs and such, things like that. All surfaces will be cleaned with brake clean and an air gun before reassembly.

I've not had an issue with using them, safety or otherwise. But if you guys have a better alternative, please share it. I'm looking for the best deal, these are consumable **** and I'm not about to pay "tool truck prices" for them.

The quantity you plan on purchasing affects the pricing. Watch out for "Oh, By The Way", charges for shipping and handling or other Garbage fees.

I started using 2" flapdiscs off ebay after I was disappointed with how long those type of abrasive discs last. I paid $15 for 10 with an arbor, you can get a better deal if you don't need the arbor but mine always get beat up after a while.

Ebay links never last so here are example search terms: 10Pcs 2inch Flap Sanding Disc Zirconia Roll Lock 60 Grit

Autobodytoolmart.com has a decent selection of cheaper/decent quality roloc (or as we called them cookies).

I refuse to pay retail for Roloc discs. I find whole boxes of them at estate sales. I have enough for decades…

Bristle discs… I will, absolutely, pay retail for. I never find them at estate sales. I love them so much.

They used to be more common. But not so much the case anymore. I used to find them at HF and HD.

We had a Grainger machine at CAT with all that the consumables available in it, but now it's up to me to find and buy them.

the last I bought were Benchmark, and they work well for the $. If you can get a great deal on 3M, close to Benchmark pricing, then definitely go for that.

I have been opportunistically buying 3m consumables on Amazon warehouse. Bristle discs, Cubitron, etc. Also have been slowly piecing together a headlight restoration kit.

I only need a few of the brown / medium rolocs, for brakes on family vehicles. I buy two or three at NAPA per year. Worth every penny, there is nothing else like them.

As others said, I wouldn't use them around bearings of any kind.

The Iola and Jefferson (Wi) swap meets always have vendors offering bags with assorted grits for a few dollars. I buy a bag every few years, although I have used a lot of my stockpile lately and may resort to Amazon.

I've had good luck with these from Summit, they're a good bang for the buck. We get them from a decent supplier (not sure who) but they hold up a lot better than the cheapos.
