Are the magnetic ones much better than those with vice grip pliers? I sometimes find people selling snap on dial indicators for less than $150. If I can save one unnecessary rotor change, it will be well worth it. So how many home mechanics have this thing at home? Just curious.

Nothing all that critical... Brake rotors, prop shafts, etc...

I use the American made Central Tools magnetic base for setting up differentials and other similar jobs for forty years. They are sufficient quality for that. I find them very good. I don’t buy Chinese if I can help it so can’t comment about newer products.

Thanks for the replies, I picked up an American Made Central Tool indicator NIB for 55 bucks shipped off Ebay. Time will tell if it was a good purchase.

Not sure whether to be happy or sad. Machinists tools sell for next to nothing on eBay. I’ve bought $200 indicators for $30 etc etc. Really smart to check eBay for most stuff like this.

I've had a Central "ball joint" gauge for 30+ years, done what I have needed it for.
