Posted the find of this on the Garage Sale thread, already but hadn’t opened it or cleaned it. Thought this would be a good place. This is a carb rebuild box for Rochester carbs on GM vehicles in the late 50s. The old farmer was keeping his hog rings with it in addition to the carb parts.

If you were closer I'd have to sneak in and rearrange those drawers in sequential order of those alphanumeric markings! My OCD is going off just thinking about them! :)
Lugnutz, the morons at the 'educational facility' used permanent marker and the paper stick on labels on the oak drawers. Not easily removed, and not quick with over 40 cabinets with 3 to 5 drawers each.

I bought about 50 of these for 50 bucks a piece, when a local pharmacy supply warehouse closed.
I sold most of them for 200 a piece, and kept these 3 for myself, I should have kept one more.

They’re all aluminum, soft close roller bearing drawers, with a decent detent to keep them closed when not locked.

All 4 casters swivel and they roll like butta, I have approximately 1 metric **** ton of tools in each one and can still roll them around on a **** carpet..lol Only one locking caster though.

They were originally used for pill storage in pharmacies, and medical supplies in hospitals, but they make a great tool box. I had a huge Mac top and bottom that I needed a step stool to access the top of, but these are so much more convenient and easy to move. I admit the Mac was prettier though.image.jpg

My local college has a weekly sale, never ending supply of cool old metal cabinets, lab equipment, tools, desks, etc. I've gotten a ton of neat stuff. They also have auctions for big stuff, friend got a nice van for $400. Might be worth looking into if your near a college.

@Old Man Roger: I probably wouldn't have thought of this in time, but did you consider renting a big U-Haul truck (plus tow your trailer with that)?

Pulled this out of the Navy City Metals scrapyard in Bremerton WA a few years ago; paid scrap price for it. Probably came out of the shipyard. It was missing one pull (easy fix with a piece of 1/8" x 1" flat bar) and one pull was loose on one end (easy weld fix). There are no drawer slides, just angle guides; drawers are really heavy- no wonder a couple of pulls got yanked off.
I elected not to re-paint it, just leave it as it as is . I really like the patina. ( and I'm too lazy to do all the prep and paint) ;)
Has a 28" x 30" x 1/2" aluminum plate over the old hardwood top. It's a great little welding table for the cabin.

I like it!

Get some bar soap and "grease" the angles and slide area on the drawers. You won't believe the difference!

If the angles have a sharp top leading edge, round that a little with a fine file so its not shearing the soap off.

No probably about it. Military surplus, made during WWII. If you search the thread on "41-C-15", its Federal Stock Number, you will find all kinds of info, cool period photos, and other examples. The thread is usually good for a couple per year. That is one of the nicest survivors I have seen in terms of condition. Congrats.

When I saw it in the scrapyard I initially thought it was trashed. Empty carcass, upside down, in a pile of other scrap.
I looked around and saw the drawers scattered in a ~50 foot radius,; according to the guy running the loader the scrappers that brought it in just a few minutes earlier flung the drawers as far as they could, then tipped the cabinet out of the back of their truck. He had the foresight not to run over it, and actually helped me load the cabinet into my truck after I had repatriated all the drawers.

Believe I paid 50 cents a pound for it but they generously credited the heavy wooden top. IIRC, my entire bill (including a bunch of square tube and flat bar drops) was less than $85.

Upper drawers hold my welding supplies, clamps, grinding discs, etc. The lower drawers are large enough to hold a 7" angle grinder, 11# rolls of wire, etc.

@Username already in use might have you beat. I lost count of his. They are obsession-worthy. Near perfect, frankly, in form, fit, function - and looks. Seriously. Indestructible, too, as @PugetDude's story attests in a way that is more literal than most 41-C-15 salvage stories. I only have one, but it's my go to, my do-it-all, and my pulpit.

So it's only 35% to capacity, then. :) No, seriously, they will take a load - and in my experience, I have never had to grease anything, the drawers slide well unassisted.

Than you just ain't loading them heavy enough Lugz!
Is that a challenge? You know we could quantify this, right? I'll take the tools out of each drawer and weight them, and you do the same. I would pit one of my 41-C-15 drawers against any comparable size drawer from any comparable size cabinet. What's in the kitty? :)

But seriously, I don't understand the infatuation with chests with slides. Never have. I have five cabinets. Four down the basement in the Lugzsonian - the Ordnance Dept 41-C-15, a 5-drawer Naval Aircraft Factory 1156-1, a 3-drawer Dorman, and a 3-door Signal Corps chest, and a bigass multi-drawer Huot out in the garage with all my users. I'll give you one guess which one has slides and one guess which one has a couple drawers all jacked up. Yeah, you have to use some muscle to pull these drawers out, but there's nothing to bend, break, or get stuck.

I just landed one of those a few weeks ago on Bainbridge Island with the help of @Private Lugnutz . I hope you were well armed when you went to Navy City. I went there two years ago, and it was tweaker central. Very difficult to tell the employees from the "customers". That one is very nice especially for making it through that place!

You certainly get to experience a real slice of humanity there. BI is definitely a different demographic.

I agree that the no slides are not going to get racked easily, (I have seen them done...) I have roller slides, friction slides, and yes, metal to metal on angle or flat. the metal to metal and the friction Benefit from Lube. I use bar soap or Lubriplate, (beeswax/similar)

Roller slides help with heavy drawers but even there their are good, and then great - you know what works the best? double row card files! I have three of them - one has in its bottom drawer almost all my 3/4 and 1" drive tools. there are three 12 lb ratchets in that drawer to start, and its crammed full, Heck my "official 3/4 drive set" in its box weights 80 Lbs, IIR. and that is not close to what that bottom drawer holds.

I've no argument with the old Mil stacks you are talking about. but I can guarantee if you soap or lubriplate one and compare it to a similar weighted drawer dry, it's night and day.

Sold my collection last week. These were left overs from other projects. A total of 15 pieces picked up over the years. Love FB Marketplace
